I have a master's degree in Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse. I teach freshman composition at the college level. I have previously worked for a university-based writing center and as an embedded tutor in English composition and literature courses. I have experience in tutoring in online environments.

My curriculum allows learners to self-actualize so they may pursue knowledge, express their creativity, and contribute their ideas on scholarship. I find that writing perfectly vitalizes these desires. I believe that a necessary step for a learner's sense of self is to have them recognize themselves as writers. They may not necessarily write or speak in professional circumstances but when they employ facets of a traditional composing process, such as establishing and adapting for an audience, carefully selecting and editing their words, and using language to emote, persuade, and to narrate, that is in fact writing. When learners accept their power as writers, they not only hone their writing skills further but become better critical readers. They no longer feel like passive participants, having information doled out to them, but begin to see themselves as fellow scholars and contributors to our collective knowledge. My learners want to critique as much as they create. They learn that their opinions matter and that knowledge is not immutable. They have an authorial voice and learn to use it.
