About Ethan
I'm from Merced, California, but live now in LA (when there aren't wildfires!) I studied at the University of Southern California for six years, majoring in Jazz Trumpet and receiving a Master's in Music. I'm now a professional freelance player, teacher, and composer. I take all three disciplines very seriously! My theory experience began like many of you, in university, where I started a casual tutoring service for some of my classmates. Then I worked at tonebase, a world-class collection of courses on almost every instrument, where I worked closely to develop hundreds of courses, including many on music theory. In my own private studio, I've developed close relationships with many students, of various ages and skill levels, to help them build an appreciation of the mechanics of music, without overwhelming them with definitions and techniques. Music is felt – it's not a subject of definitions and abstractions. In order to understand how it works, we have to begin by listening and taking it apart, piece by piece. I've taught dozens of private students, and they almost all struggle with making sense of an overwhelming number of definitions, terms, and confusing rules. I studied at the University of Southern California for 6 years, earning a Master's in Jazz Trumpet and studying Composition with Donald Crockett and Neal Desby. I built Music Theory courses for tonebase, an innovative online learning platform, and have taught dozens of students using a combination of approaches. Music theory is not hard if you can hear it and break it down. Whether you want to play an instrument, are struggling with a class, or just have a better understanding of music, I guarantee I can help you understand and build comfort with the basics (scales, intervals, chords) through the more advanced topics (formal analysis, four-voice writing, jazz theory, composition), and beyond.

Ethan is a master of the trumpet and had much to offer me in terms of learning technique and my sound. I am starting to get into jazz trumpet and we are getting to learning about the greats, learning jazz standards, and the bebop language. A lot of hard work but I feel I am getting so much better every week. Also one of the nicest people I have met.
