The purpose of this course is to share several specific struggles in Mexico for grassroots community-based liberation through self- determination, self-defense, and autonomy. These are specific examples from both Native and non-Native communities in Mexico, but it is truly my belief that these examples can serve to educate, inspire, and perhaps even spark similar movements among Black, Native, and other racialized communities in both countries, if not the world.
By no means, however, do we assume that these specific communities and geographies are the only ones doing so, or that these are the only viable strategies for liberation. In fact I think in order for us to have a much broader perspective to adequately draw from, we must also take a look at similar communities and strategies from around the world.

I have known Simon for about 10 years now and first met him through student organization events and activities when I was at the University of Washington -Seattle. He had an established rapport with alumni and upperclassmen and I believe that is was through his consistent communication and planning that he was able to do this. Through his deep and experiential knowledge in geopolitics, neoliberalism and grassroots liberation, Simon has been a backbone in empowering students of color at different institutions across the United States in developing their voice and skills in student organizing and engagement, while teaching. If you are looking for a Superprof who is creative and assertive in investigating topics of self-determination and autonomy then you are assured that working with Simon will hit this mark.
Simon was a guest teacher in my classroom and proved to be very helpful to my students, carefully explaining context and leading thoughtful discussions. He is fully bilingual and has outstanding English and Spanish oral and written skills, and he keeps the topic lively and interesting.
I met Simon while I was an undergrad in college at UW-Madison; he was hired by a student organization to come and give a presentation on his journalistic work regarding self defense groups within Mexico. Simon knows how to articulate himself very well at the higher educational level. I have learned so much from his passionate delivery.
I've had the pleasure to both attend Simon's lectures and bring him to my own communities to teach. My favorite aspect of Simon's teaching style is his emphasis on relationships. Simon recognizes that the best way to learn is to have the freedom to curiously explore various perspectives of a topic or event. Not only is Simon knowledgeable enough to facilitate this line of inquiry, but he also dedicates time and effort to build trust with his students. Simon is an extraordinary teacher and it is an honor to learn from him; I can't recommend him enough.
I learned more from Simon in one summer program than in all of my undergrad combined. He’s an expert in his field and is able to communicate complex ideas and information in an understandable, engaging, and relevant way. It’s also obvious that he loves what he does, which makes learning from him enjoyable and inspiring.
Simón is an incredible professor because of his dedication to his students and commitment to collective liberation. He brings a range and in depth expertise in different socio-political movements and history, while being to share such knowledge fluently in both English and Spanish. I can’t recommend him as a professor enough!
I have known Simon Sedillo for over 15 years in professional settings. As a Veteran Teacher and Juvenile Attorney with an expertise in the US criminal justice system, I find Simon to be one of the best presenters, lecturers and political thinkers that I have even hosted in my classroom. Simon can break down challenging concepts and put them into a perspective that young people or newly emerging academics can understand, process and develop. Simon is extraordinarily intelligent and experienced in his field. Not many writers and lecturers have lived the experience they write about. Simon has done this. He has always been honest, compelling, and has a level of dedication to his students and followers that is genuine. I promise that with Simon Sedillo as your Professor or Tutor, you will gain knowledge and wisdom that will enhance and possibly change the way you view and experience the world in a good way! I give him my highest and best recommendation.
