About Larry
Raised and educated on the South Side of Chicago, I attended Englewood High School and later Chicago State University for my undergraduate degree in American history and my graduate degree in English. While an undergraduate, I became a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Theta Chapter, which since 1922 has stressed the importance of a high school and college education with the “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” program. My grade point average as an undergraduate was 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. As a graduate student, my grade point average was 4.0 on a 4.0 scale; in 2001 and 2002, I received the Graduate Division Honors Award; in 2002, I was designated an All-American Scholar; and in 2003, I received the Irwin J. Suloway Exceptional English Graduate Paper Award. For my master’s degree in English, I had to take undergraduate prerequisites as well as graduate courses. Some of my courses included English Literature 1/233, English Literature 2/234, Black American Fiction 291, Literary Criticism 331, Women’s Voices 390, English Literature/Shakespeare 411, Methods and Materials of Literary Research 427, Descriptive Grammar 436, and Seminar in American Literature/Southern Literature 453.

My teaching philosophy is that all of my students deserve my respect and have important life stories to share. I believe students need an environment that encourages them to ask questions about what they read, write, and think. I create this type of environment by making learning challenging and by respecting the ideas of my students. All of my students read and analyze challenging stories and essays and write about their responses on a variety of topics. This process of reflecting and questioning is important because it can lead to revelations and personal growth and can help students to see how others have dealt with challenges and had to make difficult choices.

Mr. Alexander was extremely knowledgeable. He was able to assist me with retrieving credible sources in addition to writing stronger introductory paragraphs. Will definitely reach out to him in the future for guidance.
Professor Alexander is a great English tutor who makes writing scholarly college papers easy to understand. I like the fact that he made me look at reading and writing in a different and more interesting way, taking my opinions into consideration and challenging me to use the They Say I Say approach. I feel much better prepared to handle college reading and writing assignments successfully.
I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Alexander as a tutor. His friendly demeanor and meticulous organization skills foster a conducive learning environment. Recently, he helped me revise an APA research paper for a college course, challenging and guiding me to craft a superior paper.
I embarked on a writing journey with Larry Alexander, focusing on grammar, essay revisions, and MLA citations. The experience exceeded my expectations. Larry’s discerning eye uncovered my strengths and weaknesses, helping me to embark on a path of self-improvement. Also, his guidance in essay revisions was invaluable. Today, I approach college essays with confidence, armed with the knowledge of structuring compelling arguments backed by robust examples.
