About Larry
At the end of each semester while teaching at Prairie State College, my students were asked to anonymously evaluate me based upon 24 criteria, including my preparation for class, enthusiasm, knowledge of the subject matter, requiring high-level thinking, fairness, and treating students with courtesy and respect. I always scored high in each category, and below are some of the comments that my English 099, 101, and 102 students made about me and the class in response to the question: What would you say to a friend who was thinking of taking this course from this professor? Comments from Developmental English 099 Students “He’s a great teacher. He keeps your focus and is also funny.” “That he is a great teacher, he knows his job and gives good advice…Just take into consideration what he tells you to do and take heed and do it…He also gives us good info on the different subjects in class for researching papers.” “I would tell my friend that he is a well-organized professor about English and how to explain it to someone who is either a beginner or an advanced writer…I will leave English 99 knowing how to write essays and to better understand what I’m writing.” Comments from English Composition 101 Students “I would tell them make sure you don’t skip class because you will miss a lot. This class goes fast. Be on track with your assignments, and don’t get behind…I like that he knows this course well, he can answer any question, he makes comments on our papers and is passionate in discussions. The course is beneficial to other courses because it is the core for all writing, especially papers.” Comments from English Composition 102 Students “Yes, he’s entertaining, not boring… and he makes you interact and explains in depth.” “I would tell them yes to go ahead. The teacher will allow you to challenge yourself. He is very understanding…I like that he takes the time to hear us on what we have to say…You need high-level thinking. It’s a literature class, so there’s no right or wrong answer. But you do have to think.”

My teaching philosophy is that all of my students deserve my respect and have important life stories to share. I believe students need an environment that encourages them to ask questions about what they read, write, and think. I create this type of environment by making learning challenging and by respecting the ideas of my students.
My role as a tutor is to be patient, understanding, and encouraging, and to help my students recognize and develop their own writing styles. Another goal is to allow students to study topics and subjects that they are interested in while using multi-media tools to work on grammar, journal writing, error correction, and essay revisions.
All of my students read and analyze challenging stories and essays and write about their responses on a variety of topics. This process of reflecting and questioning is important because it can lead to revelations and personal growth and can help students to see how others have dealt with challenges and had to make difficult choices.

Mr. Alexander was extremely knowledgeable. He was able to assist me with retrieving credible sources in addition to writing stronger introductory paragraphs. Will definitely reach out to him in the future for guidance.
Professor Alexander is a great English tutor who makes writing scholarly college papers easy to understand. I like the fact that he made me look at reading and writing in a different and more interesting way, taking my opinions into consideration and challenging me to use the They Say I Say approach. I feel much better prepared to handle college reading and writing assignments successfully.
I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Alexander as a tutor. His friendly demeanor and meticulous organization skills foster a conducive learning environment. Recently, he helped me revise an APA research paper for a college course, challenging and guiding me to craft a superior paper.
I embarked on a writing journey with Larry Alexander, focusing on grammar, essay revisions, and MLA citations. The experience exceeded my expectations. Larry’s discerning eye uncovered my strengths and weaknesses, helping me to embark on a path of self-improvement. Also, his guidance in essay revisions was invaluable. Today, I approach college essays with confidence, armed with the knowledge of structuring compelling arguments backed by robust examples.
