About Steve
I'm a software engineer based in London, seven years in industry, most recently co-founding an education technology startup. Building something to help people learn made me pay much closer attention to how learning actually works, and how rarely it works the way it's taught.
I've taught and mentored engineers who now work at Google and Apple via Makers. I held an offer from Oxford to study software engineering and turned it down to build the startup and teach instead. I don't regret it :)
Outside work I read, dance and am currently learning Spanish badly but persistently, a useful reminder of what being a beginner feels like.

I spent seven years building software professionally before I started teaching. That shapes the sessions: I care whether you can do the thing, not whether you can describe it well in an exam hall.
First session is a diagnostic. We work through problems and I find where the gaps actually are. Usually not where you'd expect: a student stuck on recursion is often really stuck on how memory works. The plan comes from what I find, not a template.
Then you get work between sessions. Small, specific, pitched just past what you can currently do. You bring back what you built and what broke, and we work through it.
Sessions are practical. We write code, break it, fix it. I'll ask you to explain things back, the point at which you can explain something is the point at which you own it. I'd rather you were fluent than fluent-sounding.
