About Safa
Throughout the many years of tutoring, I was very fond of my mathematics capabilities. I love math, and through this love, I essentially devoted my community college career to it. It was not until I came to the University of California, San Diego, that I realized that I do not like math, but the capability to teach it to others. Looking back, I used to be that peer who would create study groups, teach those study groups, help my fellow classmates when they are stuck on certain problems. This lead me to the Math Tutoring Center at my local community college where I worked as a tutor. Nearly five years have passed and I am still tutoring as my passion to teach individuals that math is not difficult with proper training. Being a tutor for this long has helped me understand how the mind works with regards to my students. I tend to be very patient and make sure to note that it is okay to make mistakes. Lessons are taught from mistakes, not success, and with these learning opportunities, students are able to use these skills in the real world. This is why I love tutoring, to hear the joys of finally attaining a high test score after countless lows, to help guide students in the right direction, and finally, to build the confidence and resilience students should have when taking exams.

As a tutor, I share my knowledge by:
- First getting to know my student and their background is my first priority, their struggles, and I connect with them on a personal and professional level. I make sure to build trust and reliable communication skills with them so that they are confident enough to approach me for help regarding any issues that may persist with their learning experience in math.
- Once we have established the tutor-tutee bond, I have the student inform me about their class, their teacher's teaching style, which method they are taught by and also how they are assessed.
- Based on the information that my student provides for me, I plan a strategy to use to tutor my student and fill their learning gaps.
- I do not spoon feed my students nor do I solve problems for them. I guide them towards the right path when they are struggling, so that they learn to a process of positive reinforcement while also discovering their strengths and weaknesses and learning to overcome the educational barriers.
- My day to day lessons are based on the lessons that the student is taught in school and in the classroom settings. I have my student provide me with all their content and materials so that I am aware of where they stand with the material and what I need to focus our time on.
- My goal as an instructor/mentor/tutor is to obviously teach my student how to be an independent learner overtime and discover ways to overcome obstacles that they may face, however it is to also master building a sense of self-confidence and resilience in my students which are two common features that I see most students who seek tutoring lack.
-Throughout my lessons, I take on the approach of reteaching most math lessons to my students and I make sure to review the examples given in class to ensure that the student understood all the material by the time we finish relearning the lesson. After that I take it a step further by challenges my students with a variety of easy and difficult problems to hammer in the concept by implementing plenty of practice and review in the curriculum.
- Finally, I encourage the student to do independent study and review all the prior content to constantly refresh their memory and avoid the bitter encounter of forgetting most of the material that was taught months in advance.
- As a bonus, I make sure to educate my students about their expectations in future math classes and how math is a building block. They start to understanding that in math one concept and success in one class leads to success in all consecutive classes.
