About Mr
Hi, I'm Mr. Keirstead! I'm a middle school ELA teacher, graduate student in American History, and someone who genuinely believes that reading and writing can change lives—when we approach them the right way. I've spent the last four years teaching 4th and 5th grade English Language Arts and English Language Development in one of the top school districts in the country. I'm an Apple Certified Teacher, but more importantly, I'm someone who's committed to meeting students where they are and helping them discover what they're truly capable of. My teaching philosophy is pretty simple: students learn best when they're engaged, when their voices matter, and when they have agency over their own learning. I don't believe in the old factory-model approach to education where kids memorize facts and regurgitate them on tests. Instead, I focus on building real skills—critical thinking, authentic writing, close reading, and the confidence to tackle challenging texts. Outside the classroom, I'm a graduate student studying literature as a response to power and government, and I run a Substack newsletter exploring the intersection of literature, philosophy, and community organizing. I love science fiction, children's literature, and finding ways to make complex ideas accessible and engaging for young people. I believe in skills-based, student-centered learning that prioritizes engagement and genuine understanding over rote memorization. My approach emphasizes what I call "headware skills"—the thinking strategies students will use throughout their lives. I use Socratic seminars, literature circles, and project-based learning to help students develop critical thinking, close reading, and authentic writing skills. I incorporate Universal Design for Learning principles to ensure all students can access rigorous content, and I'm particularly skilled at supporting multilingual learners through scaffolded instruction that builds both language and literacy skills simultaneously.
A Typical Lesson
A typical session might begin with a short, engaging text or writing prompt that connects to students' lives or interests. We'll use close reading strategies to unpack meaning together, then transition into either discussion-based analysis or hands-on writing practice. I use models and mentor texts extensively—showing students what strong writing looks like before asking them to produce it. Sessions often include collaborative work, immediate feedback, and opportunities for revision. I believe in making thinking visible, so I'll model my own reading and writing process out loud, showing students that even experienced readers and writers work through challenges.
