About Naoko

As an experienced pianist and educator, I’m committed to providing a supportive and enriching learning environment for every student. My background includes working as a vocal coach and répétiteur with respected opera companies like the Kentucky Opera and Des Moines Metro Opera. I’ve also worked as a staff accompanist at a university and recently assumed a co-director role with a well-established Japanese piano guild in Tokyo that has been active for 30 years. In addition to my work in opera and academia, I’m actively involved in my local community, where I lead several well-established music groups, direct community choral ensembles, and serve as a music director at a church. I thoroughly enjoy these roles, as they allow me to nurture and support musical growth at all levels, reflecting my passion for fostering a love of music in others. I believe my teaching approach stands out because I focus on understanding music as an interconnected whole. My collaborative background helps students see how different musical elements fit together, which deepens their overall appreciation and understanding of music. Combined with my training in body mapping, I help students develop healthy and effective playing techniques that support long-term success. When you study with me, you can expect a professional yet friendly atmosphere where your musical journey is nurtured every step of the way. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your skills, I’m here to help you achieve your goals with confidence.

My approach to teaching is grounded in a blend of classical training and a personalized touch, aimed at helping each student find their unique musical voice. I believe in the importance of solid technical foundations, but I also prioritize creativity and expression in every lesson.

Teaching Method and Techniques:
I use a mix of traditional techniques and modern insights, focusing on building strong fundamentals like hand positioning, finger strength, and posture. I incorporate body mapping to help students understand how their physical movements affect their playing, ensuring they develop healthy, effective practice habits. My goal is to make sure students not only play well but also play in a way that feels natural and sustainable.

Typical Lesson Plan:
My lessons are structured yet flexible, tailored to each student’s needs. Typically, a lesson includes:
1. Warm-Up Exercises: We begin with technical drills, scales, and arpeggios to build dexterity and reinforce technique.
2. Repertoire Work: We dive into pieces suited to the student’s level and interests, focusing on both technique and expressive interpretation.
3. Theory and Ear Training: I weave in musical theory and ear training to deepen the student’s understanding of the music they’re playing.
4. Collaborative Practice: For more advanced students, I introduce collaborative work, exploring the dynamics of playing with others.
5. Review and Goal-Setting: Each session ends with feedback and setting goals for the next lesson, ensuring consistent progress.

What Sets Me Apart:
What distinguishes me as a tutor is my extensive experience in both solo and collaborative piano. My background as a vocal coach and repetiteur provides students with unique insights, particularly for those interested in accompaniment. This collaborative experience encourages students to think about music as a whole, fostering a deeper, multidimensional understanding of how different musical elements interact. Additionally, my training in body mapping helps students play more efficiently and healthily, reducing the risk of injury and enhancing their overall playing experience.

Who the Lessons Are For:
- Children and Beginners: I specialize in making music enjoyable and accessible, helping young students develop a love for the piano from the start.
- Young Aspiring Pianists: For those with some experience, I offer rigorous training to help them advance, whether they’re preparing for performances, exams, or simply looking to improve.
- Adults Seeking Growth: I also work with adults who want to deepen their understanding of piano and explore artistic expression, regardless of their previous experience.

My lessons are designed for anyone who loves music and wants to grow as a pianist, whether they’re just beginning or looking to refine their skills.
