About Nolan
I am a dedicated chess tutor with 6 years of experience teaching students of all levels, from complete beginners discovering the game to advanced players preparing for tournaments. Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege of teaching around 200 students, each with unique goals and learning styles. This experience has shaped my belief that chess education is most effective when it is deeply personalised. I take the time to understand each student’s strengths, challenges, and ambitions, creating tailored lesson plans that balance structured learning with creative exploration. My approach emphasises the development of critical thinking, decision-making under pressure, and strategic foresight. I break down complex ideas like openings, tactical combinations, and endgame techniques into simple, practical lessons that students can apply immediately. I also incorporate game analysis, scenario-based exercises, and practice games to help learners build confidence and refine their skills in real time. For those interested in competitive play, I provide tournament preparation and time management strategies, ensuring they can perform under pressure. One of my unique strengths as a tutor is my ability to adapt my teaching style to suit different types of learners. Whether a student thrives with visual demonstrations, step-by-step analysis, or hands-on practice, I create an engaging and supportive environment that fosters growth. I also prioritise the values of sportsmanship and integrity, helping students not only become better players but also more thoughtful and respectful competitors. For me, teaching chess is about more than just improving ratings; it’s about empowering students with skills that extend beyond the board—discipline, focus, and confidence in their problem-solving abilities. My goal is to inspire every student to see chess not only as a game but as a lifelong tool for growth, strategy, and creative thinking.

My teaching methodology for Chess is built on a balance of creativity, integrity, and effective time management, ensuring that every student develops both strategic understanding and practical skills. I believe that chess is more than just a game; it’s a way to strengthen problem-solving abilities, improve focus, and cultivate patience. My lessons are designed to engage students at all levels, from those just beginning to learn the rules to those preparing for competitive play. Creativity plays a central role in my approach. I encourage students to explore different styles of play, think outside the box, and discover their unique strengths on the board. Through guided analysis of famous games, scenario-based exercises, and practice matches, I help learners develop a flexible and dynamic approach to strategy. At the same time, I prioritise integrity, ensuring that my students learn the importance of sportsmanship, respect for opponents, and ethical play—values that extend beyond chess into daily life. Time management is another key element of my teaching. I integrate timed practice sessions and teach students how to make effective decisions under pressure, an essential skill for competitive matches and tournaments. Additionally, I provide structured lesson plans that gradually build knowledge in openings, middle-game tactics, and endgame techniques, while incorporating regular assessments to track progress. Beyond Chess, I can also teach related subjects that complement a student’s learning journey, such as logical reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical skills. Whether a student wants to enjoy chess as a hobby or pursue it at a higher level, my goal is to create a supportive and motivating learning environment. By combining creative exploration with structured learning, I help students grow in confidence, sharpen their skills, and enjoy the beautiful game of chess.
