About Thomas
I have competitively played chess for over 15 years at county and national level. I have represented Kent through all age groups and also played for South and East England. I have won numerous county tournaments as an individual player and I currently play for Kent and the University of York while studying Physics with Philosophy.
I have extensive experience teaching children of both primary and secondary school ages, but most of my current students are adults. Several of my students have developed from complete beginners into solid 800-1000 rated players in their first few months of tutoring,
I have level 4 IOF chess certification and I am fully DBS checked.

I offer lessons to beginner, novice and intermediate level chess players.
I start by gauging the ability of my students and then tailoring my lessons to them. With beginners I start with the fundamentals: working on vision, positioning and development. Then gradually bringing in tactics and opening theory.
With novice and intermediate players we will start to look more in depth at opening theory and analysing positions. At this stage a chess player should have several openings they are confident in and be comfortable playing most openings.
The main target of all my lessons is game situations, this allows all levels to quickly incorporate the lessons into games. I reinforce this by finishing the lesson with several games where we focus on the elements of the lesson.
