About Lorna
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught for over 38 years in a variety of schools including state comprehensive and grammar schools. I also taught for 5 years in a private exam cramming college and on Easter revision courses. I enjoy private tuition and getting to know students and their families and have had excellent feedback and success. I taught part time for Wey Education between 2016 and 2020. This involved teaching double award science and a level Chemistry to classes of up to 20 students from all over the world. I also run intensive revision courses in A level chemistry for individual or groups of students.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
he summer holidays I also taught a girl living in Moscow who wanted to ensure that she raised her achievement to get a high predicted grade for university applications.
I have a current DBS certificate and have completed child protection training. I am willing to show my certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at a comprehensive school in Hounslow and completed my PGCE at Sussex University.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have delightful GCSE and A level students from local high schools, English and Welsh speaking! I also support Chinese and Russian students who board in UK schools and those who wish to pass entrance exams to these schools. Many of my students have been having lessons for over a year.

I am a teacher of gcse and igcse double award science and separate chemistry and A level chemistry (38 years experience in schools and colleges!). I currently teach part time from home via the Internet (zoom). I will boost your confidence and provide you with excellent resources, tailored to your needs. I very much enjoy supporting students and seeing them progress and have a number of happy students whose confidence I have boosted and are now enjoying their lessons at school and being much more successful!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach iGCSE and GCSE chemistry and biology. I am an experienced A level chemistry teacher.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a B.A. (hons.) and M.A. in Biochemistry (Oxford University) and a PGCE (Sussex University). I also studied Open University courses in Environmental Policy and have a M.Ed. in Leadership and Management.
- How much do you charge?
My standard fee is £35 an hour for GCSE and £40 an hour for A level.
- Where do you teach?
Online only.
- When are you available?
I am available Tuesday to Friday inclusive. School holidays are also available.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
My experience is with students of age 14+ in the preparation towards GCSE, iGCSE and A level exams. I particularly enjoy teaching A level students and clarifying what is needed to get a high grade in A level chemistry. My students have commented what amazing progress they have made and how it has boosted their confidence.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
As I live in Wales, WJEC is the sole examining board but I also have a lot of experience teaching OCR, AQA, IB and Edexcel.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I am very happy to teach by Zoom. I have a large bank of topic-based questions and markschemes and text books for all syllabuses. I also use online resources and share my screen during the lesson. Payment for lessons can be made in cash or by direct bank transfer.
