About Siko

I am PhD Candidate in Chemical Engineering, specialising in Bioprocess Engineering at the University of Cape Town (UCT). I am passionate about drug discovery and development, entrepreneurship, development and commercialisation of biomedical innovations, and uplifting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. I am currently developing a pilot innovative anticancer drug manufacturing process (in preparation for preclinical and clinical trials requirements as per Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)) at the Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research, in collaboration with the Institute of Infectious and Molecular Medicine, UCT. I have an educational background in Pure and Applied Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular & Cellular Biology, and Bioprocess Engineering.I describe myself as a highly motivated, progress-oriented, multidisciplinary, entrepreneurial research and development (R&D) aspiring scientist and engineer. To develop myself in academia and to groom my passion for teaching, I have been involved in teaching and learning, working as Teaching Assistant for several courses in Bioprocess Engineering, Chemistry and Biological Sciences at UCT. My PhD project is focused on pharmaceutical drug/diagnostic discovery and development, scaling up pharmaceutical drug/diagnostic manufacturing processes, and improving cost efficiencies in the manufacture of cost-effective innovative drugs by optimizing bioprocesses and product yields. I would like to contribute to the driving of the South African bioeconomy in the healthcare sector. I believe that I am demonstrating the skills and abilities to become successful and illustrious research and development scientist engineer. I enjoy teaching because it gives me an opportunity to impact someone's life while transferring the knowledge and my skills to t someone else. This to me is one of the ways I use to make the world a better place than I found it.

In a traditional classroom, the teacher stands in front of the room and lectures to the students as the students listen and take notes. Unfortunately, this is known as not being the most effective way to maintain students' interest and focus throughout the lesson. To circumvent this, I make my lessons interactive by creating lessons that involve students every step of the way. I motivate my students and encourage open communication and free-thinking to make them feel important and motivated. I am positive and enthusiastic and I recognize my students for their contributions. Videoconferencing is one of the ways I use technology and encourage my students to be technology savvy. I try to create real-world examples and connections to give my students a better understanding of why they are learning.
