About Andrew
My name is Andrew, and I am a 17-year-old tutor going into my freshman year at Babson College as a finance major. I have been playing chess for most of my life and have developed a strong passion for the game, both as a player and as an instructor. For the past year, I have been tutoring chess through Checkmate Academy in school-based programs, working with elementary students in structured group settings. This experience has helped me develop strong communication skills and the ability to adapt lessons to different learning levels, from complete beginners to more advanced students. I enjoy making chess approachable and engaging, focusing on building a solid foundation of understanding while also encouraging students to think independently. My goal is to create a fun and supportive learning environment where improvement is emphasized, but where the enjoyment of the game is always maintained and students leave each lesson having had a positive experience. I am looking forward to continuing tutoring over the summer and helping more students improve their skills and confidence in chess.

My name is Andrew, and I am a chess instructor with Checkmate Academy, where I teach structured, school-based chess programs across districts ranging from Hingham to Boston during the academic year. My teaching approach is hands-on and adaptable, focused on meeting students where they are and helping them build real understanding rather than memorizing moves. In a typical class, I work with groups of about 10–20 elementary school students in one-hour weekly sessions. I begin by establishing a calm, engaging environment and bringing students together around a vertical demonstration chessboard so everyone can clearly follow along. From there, I teach lessons based on the group’s skill level, starting with fundamentals such as rules and piece movement, and gradually introducing deeper concepts like opening principles, middlegame strategy, and endgame technique. I prioritize interaction and guided thinking, often demonstrating positions step-by-step and then having students apply ideas through discussion or live examples. Because I teach the same groups over multiple months, I am able to build continuity in their learning and adjust the curriculum as they progress. What sets me apart is my combination of competitive playing strength, with an online rating of approximately 1800, and my experience working within Checkmate Academy not only as an instructor but also as an observer of other tutors, where I evaluated teaching performance and student engagement. This has given me a strong understanding of effective instruction beyond just playing ability, allowing me to communicate concepts clearly to beginners while still challenging more advanced students when appropriate. I am comfortable teaching learners of all ages, but I specialize in elementary and beginner-level instruction where structure, patience, and clarity are most important.
