Full disclosure: I'm a mediocre skateboarder. If you want your kids to go to the Olympics, I'm not your guy. I picked skateboarding back up at 29 after a 14-year break just because I wanted some exercise, and I completely fell back in love with it. This is for beginners—anyone with little to no experience who just wants to learn how to roll around a skatepark and cruise the streets.
Day 1: We start from scratch. If you don't own a board, I'll supply you with a used professional setup. We figure out your stance, step onto some grass or carpet, and just get comfortable without actually moving anywhere. Then we teach you how to push.
From there, it's all about riding and building real board control. I'm not here to teach you tricks; I'm here to teach you the foundations so you actually feel ready to learn them. We can teach you the basics of bowl and park skating, including generating speed, learning to carve walls, and how to not be intimidated by different types of obstacles. By the end, you'll feel prepared enough to find a random embankment on your lunch break and just roll around. Or even go down a hill.
There's no way around it—skateboarding hurts. You're hurling yourself onto concrete. I recommend wristguards at minimum, I wear them. Kneepads are also helpful. The first three months are the absolute hardest, and it's what weeds out most people. But what it offers in return is so much more rewarding than people realize: greater determination, the ability to be completely present in the moment, and a great workout.
