About Nicholas
I’m an Australian living in London with a passion for sharing the beauty and rigour of Latin. A Classics graduate from the University of Cambridge, I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring students in Australia, the US, and the UK. This international background has given me a broad perspective on education and a deep appreciation for adapting to the needs of individual students. My approach combines the discipline of classical study with an accessible, engaging teaching style. I aim to instil not only proficiency in Latin but also an understanding of its relevance to literature, philosophy, and the modern world. Whether a student is new to the subject or looking to refine their skills, I bring enthusiasm, expertise, and a personalised touch to every session.

I believe Latin tutoring should be a tailored, focused, and engaging experience. That’s why I specialise in delivering 1:1 lessons, each lasting up to 60 minutes — long enough to dive deep into the material, but short enough to maintain energy and focus. Every student learns differently, so I adapt my teaching style to suit their unique needs, ensuring our sessions are both effective and enjoyable. A cornerstone of my approach is encouraging students to practise as much English-to-Latin translation as possible. This method is unparalleled in helping students grasp the mechanics of the language, particularly its grammar and syntax. By actively engaging with the language, students gain a deeper understanding of its structure, which is vital for mastering Latin. Keeping students interested is central to my teaching philosophy. Latin isn’t just an ancient language; it’s a key that unlocks a treasure trove of literature, poetry, and philosophy that explores timeless questions about human existence. I aim to inspire my students by showing how a classical education, with Latin at its heart, provides a foundation for navigating and thriving in the modern world. Learning Latin develops analytical thinking, critical reasoning, and logical problem-solving skills: qualities that benefit students far beyond the classroom. It also enriches linguistic understanding, offering insights into the roots of English and many other languages. Whether tackling the challenges of today or preparing for the opportunities of tomorrow, Latin offers tools for intellectual growth and resilience, making it as relevant now as it has ever been.
