About Gabriel
Hello I'm Gabriel, I grew up in Strasbourg before moving to London and have recently finished my first year studying Classics at Cambridge. Growing up in a multicultural city gave me an appreciation for the way that languages influence one another, which is a big reason why I find the study of Classics so fascinating! I love theatre (especially Greek tragedy!) and music - I play the oboe which I always tell my friends will set me up to learn the diaulos! I'm also a big fan of English literature and enjoy reading in my spare time. As someone currently studying Latin and Greek, I understand the difficulty which we often experience. I hope to help students to overcome this difficulty and enjoy the study of these wonderful languages! I also like to analyse English literature with students - I often find that looking at texts with new people reveals things which you would never have considered yourself.

The study of Classics is split between three main areas: grammar, translation and textual criticism. My approach is to establish a strong base in grammar in order to strengthen the student's translation and critical skills, since these last two often find their roots in grammar. After developing the student's grammatical skills through exercises, we will move on to translation and textual criticism. It is also important to have strong vocabulary for translation. This is a skill best learnt by encountering vocabulary in context. I aim to teach vocabulary with a view to translation and to encourage students to work out the meanings of words based on contextual, grammatical and etymological clues. The direction of the classes will be determined by the requirements of the student, and if they would prefer more help with any part of the course in particular I am happy to provide it. Lessons will typically be one hour long, in which we will look first at some grammatical concepts and vocabulary before tackling a passage for translation and critical analysis. Alternatively, we can take a focus on passages of set texts which the student might want help with. I'm happy to teach any level of Latin and Greek learner before GCSE, although lesson structures will vary according to the student's level. I'm also happy to help with English students at GCSE level in developing their critical skills. From my experience as a Classicist I focus primarily on developing the learner's understanding of the passage at hand to draw meaning from its language, form and structure in combination.
