About Harriet
I am a History PhD student with a First-Class BA in History and an MPhil in Modern European History from the University of Cambridge, currently researching women’s political thought in nineteenth-century Italy.
I have much experience tutoring school and sixth-form students, as well as running seminar-style undergraduate and postgraduate sessions. This work has covered the history of the world from 1300 to the present, meaning I am confident handling a broad range of topics.
I have a genuine enthusiasm for history and enjoy sharing this with my students and helping them to achieve their academic goals.

My approach varies dependent on the needs of the student, but I consistently take a highly interactive and dialogic approach, firmly believing that speaking things aloud and explaining them oneself is the best way to embed understanding and increase confidence.
GCSE/A level: we typically start by establishing knowledge of content and context; we then develop understanding and make links between different topics; finally, we apply this understanding to various exam-style questions.
Undergraduate: similar to the above but these sessions push the student’s independent and critical thinking further; emphasis will be on developing more nuanced arguments and developing independent conclusions in relation to the primary and secondary material.
Casual learning: these sessions tend to be less linear and more exploratory, where we follow the threads of the student’s interests, looking at broader questions of causality and change, and discussing different approaches to historical thinking; different materials (articles, books, documentary series, etc.) are used as stimuli for discussion.
I offer a free 30-minute trial session in which to learn about the student’s needs, establish expectations, and get a sense of whether we are a good fit.
I look forward to hearing from you!

I first met Harriet during a debating class in sixth form. I was instantly impressed by how articulate, passionate and well informed she was in the subject matter. She was able to get her point across so well and help to inform the opposing side of her argument in a succinct and well thought out way, despite being under pressure. 10 years later and I can confirm she has continued to perfect these skills! With tutoring experience ranging across sixth form to degree level and bringing a background of her own continued academic success and love of reading, Harriet is extremely thorough and a delight to talk to. I personally can’t imagine a better tutor, and anyone willing to learn from her has struck gold!
Harriet is incredibly reliable and enthusiastic and will take great care in being your English tutor!
Harriet is one of the most trustworthy, hardworking, and reliable people I know. She has an infectious enthusiasm for her subject, which I suspect is partly why she is so popular with her students. I wholeheartedly recommend her as a tutor.
I have been friends with Harriet for 15 years and have always known her to be very hard-working and dedicated. She is someone that can be trusted and she puts her all into everything she does. Harriet thrives in a teaching environment and ensures that students feel relaxed and reach their full potential.
