About Melissa Aoife
I'm a third-year student of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at King's College, the University of Cambridge, and I've been teaching online and offline as a CELTA-qualified professional in groups and private tuition for around five years now. As a language learner and student of second language acquisition, my teaching has taken me around the world: I've worked in Japan, China, Germany and the UK doing everything from teaching in a kindergarten, teaching refugees, to coaching professional interpreters on their intonation in news-style British English. I am also a proficient writer, having published an academic paper and won multiple competitions, and am happy to coach you in any type of style, whether business English, academic English or informal writing.

When learning a second language, it is absolutely necessary to communicate without hesitancy and with confidence if a high level is ever going to be achieved. I believe strongly in the importance of communication to learn and reinforce grammatical concepts and new vocabulary.
My speaking classes reflect this: for a high-level student, the first ten to fifteen minutes are generally free conversation, during which I make notes on certain facets of the student's language. After this we will progress on to perhaps discussing an article or a specific theme, during which new vocabulary will be introduced. If necessary, we will also spend some time targeting a specific structure the student is having difficulty with, or one I would like to see them using in their speech. Rather than interrupting the student throughout whenever they make a mistake, I prefer to interrupt selectively, and the rest of the time write down the incorrect sentence. At the end of the lesson in the last ten minutes I send these to the student, and the student then corrects their own mistakes. In this manner the student doesn't have to listen to long-winded explanations of something they perhaps already know but didn't use properly, and the teacher can focus on the topics the student really doesn't know.
In lessons targeting written expression, we will similarly discuss the article or theme first briefly, and then produce a written text. Depending on the level of the student, another option is to ask them to prepare their written text in advance, and we can correct it and discuss certain aspects of the theme in the lesson.
