I am writing this reference in my capacity as fellow of Magdalene College Cambridge, where Chris Hart reads for the undergraduate Tripos in history. I supervised Chris in Paper 17, which deals with the history of modern Europe in the long nineteenth century.

Chris has proven to be an absolutely outstanding historian. He shows great skills in deconstructing historiographical debates and in analyzing historical sources. His essays were always characterized by clear and powerful arguments, developed step by step and presented in a most elegant prose. Chris is an excellent communicator, who has the rare ability to explain very complex historical issues in an easy, understandable, and logical way, frequently illustrating his points with well-chosen examples. He is easily among the there best students I have ever taught in Cambridge. I wholeheartedly recommend him as a highly-qualified tutor, who is not only academically brilliant, but also very approachable and pleasant-natured.
