About Maxine
Hello! I've always been incredibly passionate about learning - especially when it comes to languages and humanities. I'm a native French and English speaker, studying history at the University of Cambridge. I'm passionate about languages and literature. As a proofreader, I'm reliable, precise and clear with my feedback. I will work around your needs. As a tutor, my methods try to instil both structure and passion in my students.
I've tutored extensively on other platforms and currently volunteer for an Oxbridge mentoring scheme.
I'm a firm believer in a need for passion and structure in learning. Passion is something that takes time to develop - reading around a subject, for instance, or finding links between various disciplines are key in fostering a desire for improvement. It's also something that will inevitably come through in essays (or, in the case of languages, oral exams too). All these disciplines have evolved over time by people who truly believe in them - so there's always a way to make them fun!
Structure, on the other hand, is crucial in ensuring that students reach their goals. This involves carefully following the syllabus and a lot of exam questions. I'm extremely thorough in my teaching - any areas that are problematic for a student can be solved with a bit of patience and discipline.

It's key to gain an understand of the student's level, as well as what has been covered in the school syllabus. Then - we'll set some goals. Is there a specific grade we'd like to reach? Can we exceed this? Is this just a matter of confidence?
Every class, we'll begin with a few minutes where I test what the student can remember from last lesson, as well as whether he/she can explain in his/her own words what they've learnt. It's key to make this a very active lesson on the part of the student so that they engage the content.
We'll then move to the bulk of the class - reviewing problematic topics from last session or from school, thus consolidating previous knowledge and then covering new material and practicing it.
The last segment of the session involves looking at the material in an exam context - which exam techniques should be used? I'm a firm believer in past papers - most points are lost through nerves, something solved through exam practice.
We might end the session on a wider note on the subject - are there any aspects of the topic the student would like to pursue or that they've found interesting? What has worked/not worked for them in this session? Is there anything they would like to cover next?
Ultimately, every student is different and I structure my classes around each individual.
