About Guy
I am a Chemistry tutor and professional musician based in London and I love exploring, developing and expanding knowledge in the sciences. I hold MSci and BA degrees from St. John’s College, Cambridge where I studied Natural Sciences and eventually specialised in organic chemistry for drug discovery. I also have industrial experience in a research laboratory in South Cambridge, developing therapeutic interventions for neuro-degenerative diseases.
I offer tutoring in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Singing and I also offer mock interviews for those applying to Oxbridge and for certain school admissions. I have a basic DBS certificate dated March 2017.
Over the course of my undergraduacy I studied a huge range of subjects and I am experienced in Physics, Mathematics, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Crystallography, Materials Science, Minerals Science, Quantum Mechanics, Orbitals & Symmetry, Statistical Thermodynamics, Protein Folding, Polymer Chemistry, Atmospheric Chemistry and Drug Discovery. My primary interest was in Organic Chemistry and I have academic and industrial experience of practical organic chemistry and enjoy the intellectual challenges of visualising reaction mechanics and performing retro-synthetic analysis.
My Master’s research project, for which I received a first-class mark, was in organic chemistry, studying the development of ligands for Cytochrome P450 CYP121, an enzyme of mycobacterium tuberculosis in the Abell Laboratory of the Department of Chemistry under the supervision of Dr. Anthony Coyne and I am a cited author of a paper which contains my work in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. (Fragment-Based Approaches to the Development of Mycobacterium tuberculosis CYP121 Inhibitors, Kavanagh et al. J. Med. Chem., 2016, 59 (7), pp 3272–3302.)
I received academic and music scholarships to attend Cheltenham College for my sixth-form studies, achieving top marks in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths A-levels and a distinction in Chemistry AEA. I enjoyed a varied school career including music and sports and was the inaugural recipient of the Boys’ Smith Prize for ‘making an outstanding contribution to college life’.
After graduating I co-founded a male voice sextet: The Gesualdo Six. Directed by Owain Park, the group are now signed to the artist management company Hazard-Chase and have performed several times live on BBC Radio 3 and in over 60 concerts across the UK and Europe including concerts in Regensburg, Jersey and Monaco. Alongside performing and recording with The Gesualdo Six I perform regularly with several choirs in London including those of Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral, The Temple Church and The Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy. I also perform across Italy and Europe with the Italian Ensemble Odhecaton, and have developed functional Italian language skills since first performing with them in 2016. I enjoy opportunities to travel with music and have recently toured around the US, and also to Norway, Belgium, France, Holland and Slovakia. I also enjoy the challenge of recording and have now appeared on over 20 CDs of choral music.
During my undergraduacy I held a choral scholarship under Stephen Layton with Trinity College, Cambridge. Voted ‘5th Best Choir in the World’ during my time there by a panel of critics in Gramophone Magazine I performed, broadcast, recorded and toured widely with the choir during and subsequent to my master’s degree. I have toured with the choir twice across Australia and The US, Canada and Europe. I have also toured and recorded with the men and boys of the choir of St. John’s College Cambridge, including a tour of the US and live BBC broadcasts from Normandy on the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
I remain very interested in science communication and policy and have been published in the Observer’s Science and Tech Monthly Supplement after spending 2 weeks work experience in the Guardian News and Media Offices at King’s Place. I have also had a long-form essay on funding and policy in drug discovery published in the 6th print edition of The Cambridge Globalist, a magazine for longer-form essays on a wide range of policy.
