About Jonathan
I recently graduated with a distinction in my master's (MPhil) degree in Classics from the University of Cambridge, where I also received a first class BA in the same subject. During this time I studied and sat exams in a number of topics, including Greek and Latin language & literature, ancient history, linguistics, and archaeology. I received a number of academic awards, including awards specifically for Latin and Greek translation, and I also received credit for Latin and Greek prose composition.
I am very passionate about Classics and the ancient world, a passion which I owe largely to the excellent teachers I have had over the years, who brought the subject to life and made it a pleasure to study. As a tutor, I aim to show my students how interesting these ancient cultures can be, as I believe that enjoyment and curiosity lead to excellence.
At A-Level I studied Classical Civilization, History, and Philosophy (A*A*A), as well as undertaking the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), for which I received an award from my sixth-form college.

Every student is different, and so the approach and content of lessons will be adapted to meet each student's specific aims and learning style. I have provided some examples of what lessons might include, but this is by no means exhaustive, and I am very happy to adapt and plan lessons around the student to ensure that they get the most out of their time.
Language classes (Greek/Latin):
- Discussing a prepared translation (marked in advance)
- Working through an unseen passage
- Focused session on a specific area (grammar, syntax etc.)
with targeted exercises
- Prose composition
Classical Civilization, Ancient History, etc.:
- Essay planning
- Targeted content revision
- Discussing how to improve a prepared essay (marked in
advance)
- Refining general essay technique
In addition to this, I can advise students on approaches to revision, as I have picked up a number of tips and techniques during my time as a student which made my life much easier, especially when learning content and vocabulary.
I am also happy to help with university applications
(including Oxbridge) by providing personal statement feedback and developing interview technique through practice interviews.

Jonathan has excellent knowledge in Classics, including Latin and Greek, and is a great tutor.
