About Olivia

Hello! My name is Olivia (but everyone calls me “Liv”) and I am a recent Cal Poly graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition. I just moved back to my hometown of Bakersfield, California and I am very excited to start building my career here!
As a full-time college student and active company dancer, I've experienced first-hand how important achieving physical and emotional balance is to tackling a busy lifestyle. My experiences have cultivated my passion for nutrition therapy, specifically as it relates to supporting the female body through its many stages of life. With my interest in nutrigenomics and the endocrine system, I aspire to work in a medical setting focused on holistically treating individuals who’ve experienced hormonal and subsequent fertility disruptions. In the future, I plan to circle back to academia where, as a professor in STEM-related subjects, I can help prime the next generation of healthcare professionals to be valuable facilitators of disease prevention and longevity for their clients.
In my free time, I enjoy experimental cooking, meal-prepping, dancing, and any talk about mindfulness and mental health! You can often find me listening to self-care podcasts. Lately, I’ve been listening to the Huberman Podcast, a health and wellness series that addresses subjects such as the latest evidence-based tools for maximizing studying and learning, nutrition to optimize mental performance, and protein consumption to enhance female longevity.
Over this next year, I plan to keep my mind sharp through tutoring in the subjects I’m passionate about, work towards certain healthcare certifications (including those to become a Dietetic Technician and Medical Assistant), and reintroduce the activities that make me happy into my weekly routine.

As a former AP high school student and recent college graduate, it was not that long ago that I was facing the intense pressure of today’s academia. With this said, I can empathize with a student’s fight to take on and excel in complex subjects. Through five years of acing my university’s chemistry series (general to organic to biochemistry) and other STEM courses such as metabolism, human genetics, and anatomy and physiology (A&P), I learned that beyond having mental and emotional resilience, it is very much worth the time to build a support system. Seeking out supplemental resources—particularly one-on-one tutoring, group workshops, and peer-reviewed articles and videos—nourished my learning to a level where it was natural for me to assume a teacher, advisor-like role in the classroom setting.
At Cal Poly, everything is fast-paced—especially our STEM series. As someone who likes to spend time reading about, dissecting, and revisiting information, I was always sought supplemental resources and ways to improve my studying efficiency (i.e. skim reading, deep reading with notes, review, and self-test). Having performed well with this approach, I became the “go-to” study partner. I initiated study sessions for my peers where I broke down concepts into comprehensible steps that thoroughly addressed why a physiological, chemical, or biochemical mechanism would occur. As we studied, I encouraged my peers to focus on mastering foundational principles (i.e. how each macronutrient is utilized and stored in the body, etc.) to avoid over-reliance on memorization and to support understanding as we advanced to problems of higher Bloom’s Taxonomy levels.
Several other experiences demonstrate my tutoring potential. I’ve developed study guides to prepare students for various nutrition exams, have been referred several times to become a chemistry workshop leader, and was asked to be one of the first anatomy tutors at Cal Poly. As an alumnus, my professors ask permission to use my old projects as examples for students to understand what level of detail is expected to receive an A.
I cannot promise I will remember everything about chemistry, but I can promise you that I will do whatever is needed to not just relearn the material but to grasp it in a way that allows me to explain it with passion and clarity. I want my students’ experience with these rather daunting subjects to be positive, so that they may feel empowered to embark on any career path they aspire to.
