About Rory

I’m a photographer and art director. I studied A-level Art and Design (Photography), then a BA in Commercial Photography at Arts University Bournemouth.

I spent four years at a British fine jewellery brand, going from Junior Creative to Head of Creative. I took its campaigns from first idea to finished work, art directing the shoots, shooting photo and video on them myself, then editing, retouching and laying out the work across catalogues, magazines, press ads, email and film. I now work freelance as an art director and designer.

I hired the two juniors on my team and set their quarterly targets and reviews. Reading through the applications, I saw the same small mistakes come up over and over, ones I used to make myself. Often all it takes is a bit of advice to change how you see your own work, and that’s what I want to give students here.

At A-level I was taught photography by art teachers, so I know where the practical gaps in school teaching tend to be. I went into my degree thinking photography was the only avenue for me. In fact it trained my eye and opened up a whole world of creative work, which is where I am today.

Outside of client work I still shoot my own photography, mostly on film: 35mm, and medium format on my trusty Mamiya, which I fell in love with at university.

I teach photography and art to GCSE and A-level students, and help students applying to photography and art degrees put their portfolios together.

For GCSE and A-level, lessons are built around the project you’re working on. We look at what you’ve shot so far, then work on whatever is holding it back. That might be finding photographers and artists who genuinely connect to your idea and writing about them properly, or the annotation and analysis, which is where a lot of marks quietly go missing. It might also be planning and lighting your next shoot, editing in Photoshop, or developing an idea across a series instead of stopping at the first good frame. I shoot on 35mm, 120 film and digital, so I can help whichever you’re working with.

Your coursework stays yours. I’ll teach, question and critique, but I won’t edit, shoot or write anything that goes into your submission. Exam boards are strict about this, and so am I.

For degree applications, I offer a single portfolio review or a block of four sessions. The review is an hour. You send me your work beforehand and we go through all of it together. Then, the same day, I send you written notes to work from: what to keep, what to cut, what order it goes in and what to make next. The four-session block adds planning new work to fill the gaps, sequencing and layout, and your personal statement and a mock interview.

I studied A-level Art and Design (Photography) and then a BA in Commercial Photography at Arts University Bournemouth. I’ve spent my career since directing shoots and choosing which images make the cut, and as Head of Creative I hired for my own team, so I’ve been on the reading end of portfolios too.
