About Gemma

I trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and have acted professionally for 20 years. I am represented as an actor by AHA and as writer by United Agents.

Theatre credits include 'As You Like It' & 'Children of the Sun' at the National Theatre, 'A Dead Body in Taos' for Fuel Theatre, 'Much Ado About Nothing' at Shakespeare's Globe, 'Nuclear' at the Young Vic, the world premiere of Mike Bartlett's 'Not Talking' at the Arcola, 'The Beach House' at the Park Theatre, 'Anything is Possible If You Think About It Hard Enough' at the Southwark Playhouse, 'All My Sons' for the Rose, 'Wasted' by Kae Tempest at the Orange Tree and 'Rough Cuts' at the Royal Court. TV credits include Silent Witness, Luther, Misfits, Father Brown, Shakespeare and Hathaway, Holby City, Casualty, 1066 and Waking the Dead.

I am also a writer for stage and screen, chosen to be a member of the Orange Tree Writer's Collective 2021-22. My debut play Sunnymead Court opened at the Tristan Bates Theatre in September 2020. It follows the story of two queer women who live in tower blocks opposite each other and begin a relationship from the safety of their balconies during the first lockdown. It was nominated for an OFFIE for Best New Play and named as a 2020 hit show of the year by The Stage. My second play REWILD was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Playwriting 2021 and the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award 2023.

I’ve worked as an acting coach for over five years. I coach students for drama school & NYT entry, professional auditions & self-tapes, LAMDA exams and general acting technique. I’ve helped students get into RADA, LAMDA, Royal Welsh, RCS, Drama Studio, Guildhall, and the National Youth Theatre, and to obtain work across theatre, TV and film. Acting at its best is playful and intuitive, but only when underpinned by rigorous and detailed work. Whatever you're working towards, I can help you feel both rooted and free in performance.

DRAMA SCHOOL AUDITIONS
Drama school auditions can be daunting. It is tempting to practise your pieces over and over, but often when it comes to the audition, you find yourself 'stuck'. I can guide you through the process in a relaxed and constructive way. Selecting the right material is key, and together we can find the pieces that best showcase you and engage your imagination. We will then work to ensure you feel comfortable and prepared, but also able to play and have fun on the day. I sit on the audition panel for Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and have taught at Arts Ed on the Acting BA, which has given me a unique insight into drama school application process. I have helped successful applicants to RADA, LAMDA, Royal Welsh, RCS, Drama Studio and Guildhall, as well as NYT.

AUDITION/SELF-TAPE PREP
Working towards an audition? I can help you break down a script and make bold, clear choices. We will also play with different versions of the scene, to ensure you're able to take direction and respond intuitively in the moment. I also offer a self-tape service. We can prepare and record your scenes together, and I'll provide direction between each take to ensure you're giving your strongest, most detailed performance. ACTING COACHING Are you an experienced performer looking to hone your skills? Just starting out and looking for basic training? Or would you like to explore acting as a way to improve confidence and have fun? Together, we can tailor a programme of work to suit you. Areas of work include self-taping and audition technique, voice, movement, character, text analysis, Shakespeare, and Stanislavski method. Sessions are offered on a one-off or long-term basis.

LAMDA/TRINITY
I have taught students of all ages and experience both the LAMDA and Trinity syllabus. The exams can supplement an active drama student's life, or if a pupil is new to drama, it can be a brilliant starting point in accessing acting and performance. I have worked with students with no prior experience of drama, introducing them to basic performance skills and techniques, as well as more experienced performers looking to develop through the higher grades.

"Sessions with Gemma are always inspiring. We pore over the script and I leave with a multitude of interpretations under my belt, leaving me confident to play in the room. I always make sure to book in before an audition and I know I’ll leave feeling challenged and with a clear understanding of the text. I can’t recommend working with Gemma enough." - Hebe, actor

"Gemma was a fantastic acting coach through my set of drama school auditions. She prepared me for every situation I may have in the audition room, yet still allowed me to play and feel ownership over my characters. I felt comfortable and confident going into my auditions after our sessions. I cannot recommend Gemma enough." - Emily, successful RADA applicant

"After my sessions with Gemma, I feel the most comfortable I’ve ever felt with monologues. I’m excited for what’ll happen in the room - she’s taught me how to keep flexible and malleable and for the first time I don’t feel TERRIFIED about auditioning. Highly recommend." - Alice, successful RWCMD applicant

Find out more about Gemma

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I watched lots of theatre and film as a child, which definitely lit my fire. I've been acting professionally since I was 14 years old. I got an acting agent through my local drama club, started auditioning and it went from there.
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

I love brilliant storytelling - work that is inventive and bold, and feels unique to the person creating it. Some of my favourite shows I've seen recently include John at the National Theatre, Dance Nation at the Almeida, Gulliver's Travels at the Unicorn, and Body Show at Soho Theatre. TV includes The Baby, Juice, Feel Good, Transparent, I May Destroy You, I Hate Suzie and Succession.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

Resilience, hard work and playfulness. The industry is highly competitive and full of rejection, however successful you are. When opportunities come your way, all you can do is work hard and try to enjoy the process. If it doesn't go your way, the trick is accepting the knock and moving on (easier said than done)! Even if you're not pursuing acting professionally, there will be moments which feel hard or where you doubt yourself. These can often be really useful learning points, so it's about having the resilience to push through and keep going.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Do the things you enjoy! Try not to worry too much about what you 'should' be doing. At the end of the day, we are all trying to act/write/perform because it is fun, so keep pursuing the things that feel fun. Read and watch as much as you can; it is important to fuel your imagination. You are an artist and that needs nourishing, whatever that means to you!
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

When it's fun, it's very very fun. There is no better feeling than rehearsing a play you're excited by, working with people who inspire you, writing a story that you want to put out into the world. When in flow, it is an exhilarating thing
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

My debut play Sunnymead Court, which follows the story of two queer women who live opposite each other and begin a relationship from the safety of their balconies during the first lockdown. We staged it in the small window when theatres opened up again in September 2020. It felt amazing to be making work and to be able to pay other creatives in such difficult time. It was hard writing about the pandemic even as it was still unfolding, but we tried to offer up a little moment of hope and connection.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Many, many times! My sessions are student-led; I give students tools and techniques, offer up different scripts and recommend books and shows, but we are always guided by the student's interests. I have worked with students with no prior experience of acting at all, and six months later, they are excitedly showing me a new classical speech, or wanting to work on a particular acting technique they've read about. Whatever the student's aim for the lessons, I hope to foster this passion and enjoyment in everyone.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Every student is unique, as are the challenges they may face. Listen carefully to your students, learn what their barriers are, and then work to remove them. I try to create a relaxed and open atmosphere, where students can be free to make mistakes and play around.
