About Tara
My name is Tara, and I bring over 12 years of experience as a certified special education teacher dedicated to helping students thrive. I hold certifications in Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD), Moderate to Severe Disabilities (MSD), Visual Impairments, and Special Education Consulting. I am also proudly ABD (All But Dissertation) for my Doctorate in Education, with a focus on supporting students with extensive support needs. I specialize in working with elementary students of all ability levels, including those with IEPs, diverse learning needs, or those who simply need extra support in reading, writing, or math. My sessions are carefully designed to promote skill retention, confidence building, and generalization across environments, so students don’t just learn a skill—they understand how to use it in real life. What sets my approach apart is not only my deep knowledge of special education, but also my patient, structured, and student-centered teaching style. I meet learners where they are, celebrate every small win, and help them grow both academically and emotionally. My Tutoring Approach: Supporting All Elementary Learners — Especially Exceptional Ones
Teaching Method & Techniques
I specialize in helping elementary students build strong foundations across **reading, writing, and math**—with a particular focus on:
Retention: Using multi-sensory strategies, repetition, and structured routines to help students retain what they learn.
Generalization: Helping students apply skills across different contexts—whether it’s solving a math problem during reading or using phonics in everyday writing.
Explicit Instruction & Scaffolding: I teach skills in small, manageable steps and provide guided practice before independent work.
Visuals, Movement & Manipulatives:I use tools like graphic organizers, games, and hands-on activities to make learning stick.
Positive Behavior Supports: I integrate praise, clear expectations, and visual schedules to help students stay engaged and feel successful.
A Typical Lesson Plan (45–60 minutes)
1. Warm-Up & Review (5–10 min):Activating prior knowledge and reviewing a previously taught skill.
2. Target Skill Instruction (15–20 min):Focused teaching on a specific academic or functional skill (reading, writing, or math).
3. Guided Practice (15–20 min): Practicing the skill together using structured activities or games.
4. Application & Generalization (10–15 min): Applying the skill in a new way (e.g., writing sentences using new sight words, solving a math problem in a word problem format).
5. Wrap-Up & Positive Feedback (5 min): Celebrate progress, clarify next steps, and preview future skills.
