Find out more about Emma Sarah

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

In my role as an English teacher, I cover a wide range of topics, including literature and English as a foreign language. However, I find particular enjoyment in exploring the rich world of literature, delving into the depths of stories, characters, and themes. Additionally, teaching English as a foreign language allows me to engage with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, fostering understanding and communication across borders.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Within the subject of geography, I have developed a strong passion for human geography, which focuses on the relationship between people and their environment. The complexities of societies, cultures, and the impact of globalization have always intrigued me. However, recently, the pressing issue of climate change has ignited a new fascination with physical geography. Understanding the interconnectedness between our planet and human activities has become a vital aspect of my teaching, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

During my time in secondary school, my geography teacher left a profound impact on me. He stood out for his kindness, empathy, and genuine care for his students. He recognized that education was just one part of our lives and took the time to understand our individual struggles and triumphs. His ability to create a nurturing and supportive environment allowed us to thrive both academically and personally.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

As a tutor, I believe that cultivating a passion for learning and building strong connections with students are essential for success. By getting to know each student personally, I can tailor my teaching methods to their unique learning styles and preferences. I engage them in conversations about their interests, use a variety of teaching techniques, and offer different study methods to discover what resonates with them most. This personalized approach helps students feel empowered and motivated to achieve their goals.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One memorable anecdote from my teaching experience involves a literature class where we were studying Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. To make the play more relatable, I organized a role-playing activity, assigning students different characters and encouraging them to interpret and act out key scenes. Witnessing their enthusiasm, creativity, and genuine engagement with the material was truly inspiring. It reinforced the idea that interactive and immersive experiences can greatly enhance students' understanding and appreciation of literature.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

In teaching English and geography, there are often challenges that arise. For instance, in English, some students may struggle with complex literary concepts or face difficulties in developing strong writing skills. In geography, conveying the interconnectedness of various geographical elements can be challenging for students to grasp. However, by incorporating interactive activities, visual aids, and real-life examples, I strive to make these subjects more accessible and engaging, addressing the difficulties students may face.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in helping individuals fulfill their potential and witnessing their growth into confident and knowledgeable individuals. Teaching allows me to make a positive impact on students' lives by providing them with the tools they need to succeed academically and personally. Moreover, my love for teaching extends beyond the classroom, as I am passionate about nurturing students' curiosity, critical thinking skills, and global awareness, empowering them to become lifelong learners and active contributors to society.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

In addition to personalized learning, I believe my dedication, adaptability, and continuous commitment to professional development make me an exceptional tutor. I regularly seek out new teaching methods, resources, and technologies to enhance the learning experience for my students. Furthermore, I go the extra mile to provide additional support and guidance outside of regular tutoring sessions, such as offering feedback on assignments or recommending supplementary materials. By fostering a strong teacher-student relationship built on trust and mutual respect, I strive to create a positive and impactful learning journey for each student.
