About Alyssa

Hi, I’m Alyssa! I graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in December 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Chemistry minor, and a 3.81 GPA. Throughout my undergraduate career, I served as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for biology and chemistry courses, where I discovered how much I enjoy helping others build confidence in science.

Outside of tutoring, I work full-time as a Medical Assistant, gaining hands-on clinical experience while preparing for medical school. My passion for learning extends beyond the classroom, and I genuinely enjoy making complex scientific concepts more understandable and approachable for others.

I understand that biology and chemistry can feel overwhelming, especially when you're learning fast-paced material. My goal is to create a supportive, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, developing confidence, and celebrating their progress. Whether you're preparing for an exam, working through challenging coursework, or simply looking to strengthen your understanding, I'm committed to helping you achieve your academic goals while making the learning process enjoyable.

I’m Alyssa, an IU Bloomington Biology graduate (Class of December 2025) with a Chemistry minor and three years of experience as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in General Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry I, Introduction to Biology, and Biology Lab. As both a teaching assistant and a pre-medical student, I understand that science courses can be challenging, and I believe every student is capable of succeeding with the right guidance and learning approach.

My teaching philosophy is centered on understanding, active learning, and communication. I want students to leave each lesson knowing why concepts work, not just how to arrive at the correct answer. I create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, admitting when they are confused, and working through difficult material without fear of judgment. In my experience, confusion is not a sign of failure, it is often the first step toward meaningful learning. Open communication is one of the most important parts of my tutoring, and I encourage students to explain their thinking, ask questions freely, and actively participate throughout every lesson.

Rather than lecturing, I use active learning techniques that keep students engaged. I frequently incorporate active recall by asking students to explain concepts in their own words, predict outcomes, connect ideas across topics, and solve practice problems without immediately looking at notes. This approach strengthens long-term retention, improves critical thinking, and helps students develop confidence for quizzes, exams, and future science courses.

A typical lesson begins by identifying the concepts or assignments the student would like to work on. We review difficult topics together, break complex ideas into manageable pieces, and work through examples step by step. As the lesson progresses, I regularly check for understanding using questions and practice problems rather than simply asking, "Does that make sense?" I adjust my explanations based on the student's learning style and pace, ensuring they remain actively involved in the learning process. Before each session ends, we review the key concepts covered and discuss strategies for continued practice and studying.

I tutor a wide range of biology and chemistry courses, including general chemistry, organic chemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, and related laboratory courses. My lessons are designed for high school students taking honors or AP science courses as well as undergraduate college students who want to improve their understanding, prepare for exams, strengthen problem-solving skills, or build a strong foundation for future healthcare or science careers.

What sets me apart is my combination of recent academic success, extensive teaching experience, and genuine passion for helping students learn. Having recently completed these courses myself while serving as a teaching assistant, I understand the challenges students face and the study techniques that truly work. My goal extends beyond helping students earn higher grades, I want them to become independent, confident learners who know how to think critically, communicate their understanding, and approach even the most challenging biology and chemistry concepts with confidence.
