I met Sam through a mutual friend, a film producer who had hired him as a screenwriter (more than once). I reached out to Sam for feedback on a sports screenplay based on a true story. I had poured months of research and passion into the script, but Sam helped me see it in an entirely new way.

What I appreciated most about working with Sam is that he didn’t simply tell me what was wrong with the script. Sam has an uncanny ability to identify the true emotional core of a script. I thought I was writing a story about basketball and winning. Sam recognized that the real story was about a father and son. He helped me strengthen that relationship and dramatically raise the stakes for the protagonist. What had been a story about a man trying to win became a story about a man so obsessed with winning that he was willing to neglect his son and risk everything—including his home—in pursuit of success. As a result, the character’s eventual failure and growth became far more meaningful and emotionally resonant.

Sam also helped me recognize that my protagonist wasn’t under enough pressure. His suggestions elevated both the emotional arc and the dramatic tension of the screenplay. More importantly, they taught me lessons about storytelling that I continue to apply to my writing today. Working with him made me a better writer, and I would highly recommend him to any aspiring or experienced screenwriter looking to deepen their understanding of storytelling and elevate their work.

I’d never written a script before and was honestly intimidated to share my pages with anyone, let alone a professional. Samuel made that so easy.
