About Abigail
Motivating students to be enthusiastically receptive is one of the most important aspects of mathematics instruction and a critical aspect of any curriculum. Effective teachers focus attention on the less interested students as well as the motivated ones. If disliking maths starts early on students aren’t able to build on a strong foundation in the subject and end up resenting it all the way into adult life.
For every student who hates maths, there is one who enjoys the subject and relishes working out problems. What sets them apart? It could be their mindset.
Research has shown that the growth mindset is a legitimate theory, and that people’s mindsets can change over time, but a new experiment shows clear evidence that it really is true when it comes to maths.

Help students realize that they can get better at it. Many students have a fixed mindset and believe they are just hopelessly bad at math and with this kind of defeatist attitude, they will never come around to liking it. I teach my students the “power of yet." They may not be able to solve new a math problem yet, but if they keep trying, they will eventually be successful. More of friend and sister like relationship is way more better to engage students so that they will be more open and flexible rather than timid and hiding themselves.
