About Madeleine

Hi, I'm Madeleine! I'm a Chemical Engineering student at McGill!
I know how frustrating it can be when something just doesn't click, especially in math or other sciences, so I try to make my lessons feel relaxed and easy to follow rather than stressful.
I speak English, French and Bulgarian, and I'm happy to explain things in different ways until we find the one that makes sense to you! I'm also still a student myself, so I know how what it's like to revise for tests, get stuck on an exercise or feel like everyone else understands something faster than you do. I'm patient, I don't mind repeating things, and I want my students to feel comfortable asking any questions, even if they feel like it's a "stupid" one.
The goal is for you to leave the lesson feeling less confused and more confident than when you came in!

My goal is first to understand where the problem actually comes from. At the beginning of a lesson, I would start by working through a few short exercises with my student and asking some questions in order to identify what isn't clear and where mistakes are happening.
From there, I adapt the lesson to the student's needs. I like to explain concepts in different ways, use mnemonics and memory techniques, and help students recognize patterns in math and science problems instead of simply memorizing solutions.
A typical lesson starts by identifying the problem or reviewing what my student told me they were struggling with beforehand. I then prepare a few targeted exercises we will work through together step by step. As the student becomes more comfortable I let them solve more independently while I guide them when needed.
At the end of the lesson, we would do a recap of what we learned, what improved and what is still not fully clear, so we know exactly what to focus on next.
I can also help with exam or test preparation, I use several study techniques myself, including how to review material efficiently, identifying the most important topics to focus on, and memorizing information more effectively (while understanding is essential, memorization is also useful when it is used the right way).
I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, because mistakes are part of learning. I also find that understanding why something works is much more useful than simply memorizing a formula or a solution.
