About Hye Jin
Hi, I'm Hye-Jin! I hold a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Michigan State University, and I bring that background into every lesson I teach. What sets me apart is a genuine understanding of child and adolescent development. I'm attentive to how a student's stage of development affects their motivation, confidence, and pace of learning, and I use that insight to keep students engaged rather than discouraged. I also bring years of experience as a university writing instructor, so I know what strong writing looks like at every level and how to build toward it early.
I'm based in Gaithersburg, MD, and offer both in-person and online lessons. Whether your child needs extra support catching up, steady guidance staying on track, or a push to move ahead, I'd love to help them build real skill and confidence along the way.

My approach is rooted in developmental science. I meet each student where they are, not where a generic curriculum assumes they should be. I personalize every lesson based on the student's individual needs: if they need specific focus in one area, whether it's a tricky grammar concept, essay structure, or exam prep, we spend the time there until they've genuinely got it, rather than rushing through a fixed plan. Drawing from my Ph.D. training in Human Development and Family Studies, I pay close attention to how a student's age, learning style, and personal context shape the way they process language and information. For bilingual learners, I incorporate Korean-English scaffolding when helpful, translating concepts rather than just vocabulary so students build real comprehension, not memorization.
A typical lesson starts with a quick check-in on what's on the student's mind, whether that's recent assignments, upcoming tests, or lingering confusion from class. From there, we move into targeted, personalized work on whatever the student needs most that week, using their actual schoolwork whenever possible so tutoring stays directly relevant. The student then works through problems or writing independently while I observe and offer real-time feedback, before we wrap up by recapping what was covered and setting a clear, small goal for the next session.
I work with students from Pre-K through 12th grade who want support in reading, writing, English language arts, and study skills, from elementary and middle schoolers building foundational literacy and writing confidence, to high schoolers working on essay writing, critical thinking, and academic writing for coursework or college applications. I also welcome bilingual and heritage-language Korean-English students who benefit from instruction that bridges both languages, as well as students who need individualized pacing. We can work on catching up, staying on track, or looking to move ahead of their current class level.

Hye Jin is patient, great at explaining and is super helpful. She helped with schoolwork and a better understanding of foundations. Highly recommend her skills!
Hye Jin and I met during PhD program, and we have shared our vision and mission in education since then, as colleagues and as good collaborators.
I recommend Hye Jin's tutoring style of meeting people where they are instead of pushing through a generic curriculum. It empowers students since the tutor does not expect students to be at a certain level, and it enables students to be creative in their learning journey as well.View more recommendations
