About Alex
I’m a professional saxophonist, educator, and producer with a Master’s degree in Contemporary Performance from Berklee College of Music and bachelor’s degrees in Classical Saxophone and Mathematics from Indiana University. I have studied classical performance, jazz, improvisation, music theory, composition, electronic music, mathematics, Spanish, Dutch, audio electronics, and much more. When I teach, I bring all of these perspectives together to create a well-rounded approach to each student’s journey.
I believe that becoming a better musician is about more than learning notes or memorizing rules. My goal is to help students understand why music works, develop their ears, and build the confidence to express their own ideas. Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the first time, preparing for a conservatory audition, or looking to deepen your improvisation and musicianship, I’ll meet you where you are and help you move toward where you want to go.
I’m passionate about making complicated musical concepts understandable and practical. Most importantly, I want my students to leave lessons feeling curious, capable, and excited to make music.

My approach to teaching is centered around one idea: music is a language. Music theory is its grammar, ear training is learning to listen, improvisation is learning to speak spontaneously, and practice is how we develop fluency. My goal isn't simply to teach you what to play, but to help you understand what you're hearing and develop the ability to express your own musical ideas.
Lessons are personalized around your goals, experience, and the way you learn best. A typical lesson might include technical work on your instrument, ear-training exercises, music theory, improvisation, repertoire, and discussion of how these ideas connect. We might analyze music you enjoy, learn a passage by ear, sing before playing, improvise together, or break down a difficult concept into smaller pieces. The specific balance changes depending on what will help you progress.
What sets me apart is my emphasis on understanding rather than translation. A fluent musician isn't dependent on written instructions for every musical decision—they can hear an idea internally and communicate it through their instrument. I want to help students develop that connection between what they hear, what they understand, and what they play.
I teach saxophone, improvisation, music theory, ear training, and musicianship to students ranging from beginners to advanced musicians, including students preparing for auditions or pursuing music at the university or conservatory level. I also offer personalized tutoring in mathematics and Spanish.

Alex was originally my saxophone lesson instructor, but when I started falling behind in math, he offered to help. He was very patient and made sure I really understand what I was struggling with. I saw major improvement in my math classes after working with him and I highly recommend him for anyone needing help with math!
I know Alex from my grandma and we’ve been doing lessons together for awhile. He is a very good teacher and has made me a better player throughout our time in lessons
Alex gave me private lessons for solo improv in my school and it really helped me understand what I'm playing, hear what I want to play, and play it as I'm improvising. Alex taught me what I needed to get a good ear and taught the theory to go with it really well. Would recommend!
