About Joel

I am a Berklee College of Music graduate with a degree in songwriting and over 10 years of experience teaching music. I’m a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter actively involved in several bands in the Portland area. This experience allows me to bring real-world performance and songwriting knowledge to my lessons, helping students gain practical insights into music. My teaching approach is personalized, engaging, and practical, focusing on both technique and musical creativity. Whether you’re a beginner learning your first chords, an intermediate player looking to refine your skills, or a songwriter aiming to bring your ideas to life, I tailor lessons to your individual goals and musical interests. Beyond music, I enjoy reading, weightlifting, and playing frisbee with my pitbull, Wagu. My goal is to help students not just play the piano, but truly connect with their instrument and express themselves through music.

My Approach as a Piano Teacher

Teaching Method and Techniques

My teaching method is centered around making music both fun and educational. I use a personalized approach, tailoring lessons to each student’s age, skill level, and musical interests. I believe in active learning, where students engage with the piano right from the start—whether it’s through simple songs, creative exercises, or collaborative play.

For younger students, I use pre-reading method books so they can focus on the fun of playing the piano rather than getting bogged down by the complexities of reading music. I take a slow and steady approach to reading, breaking it down into easy steps to ensure they feel confident and engaged. I also emphasize playing duets to help them develop rhythm and teamwork. Other key aspects of my approach include:
• Fundamentals & Technique – Focusing on proper hand position, finger exercises, and basic music theory.
• Music Theory – Simplified concepts like scales, chords, and progressions, explained in a way that is easy to grasp and apply.
• Song-Based Learning – Teaching students their favorite songs to keep them motivated while reinforcing technique and theory.
• Ear Training & Creativity – Helping students develop their musical ear and encouraging improvisation and composition.

A Typical Lesson Plan

A typical lesson begins with a warm-up to get the fingers moving and review basic techniques. After that, we dive into a new concept, such as learning a new chord progression or exploring a piece of music. For younger students, I’ll use pre-reading books to help them develop basic skills while keeping things fun and easy. We’ll also play duets to improve their rhythm and teamwork. At the end of the lesson, I’ll give them specific practice goals to work on for the next session.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
• Tailored Lessons – I adapt lessons to each student’s unique learning style, goals, and musical preferences.
• Engagement & Motivation – I keep lessons fun by incorporating songs and techniques that inspire the student, helping them see progress quickly.
• Emphasis on Musicality – I teach not just how to play the piano, but how to express emotions and creativity through music.
• Experience with All Ages – Whether you’re a young beginner or an adult looking to pick up a new hobby, I know how to keep students engaged and make learning enjoyable.
• Pre-Reading Method for Younger Students – By focusing on the fun of piano before tackling complex reading, younger students feel confident and enjoy learning from the start.

Who the Lessons Are For
• Beginners – Learning the basics of piano, music notation, and simple songs.
• Intermediate Players – Refining technique, learning new styles, and exploring more complex pieces.
• Aspiring Songwriters & Composers – Using the piano as a tool for composition and creative expression.
• Adults – Learning at any age, whether for personal enjoyment or skill development.

Whether you’re looking to play for fun, learn new skills, or dive into songwriting, my lessons are designed to make you feel confident and inspired at the piano.
