About Kevin

Professor McCluskey believes that what he thinks of himself is far less important than what others think. As a professional musician and world-class educator, here are quotes from students, other musicians, and club owner quotes about Kevin McCluskey

From the Industry

“...keenly observed, intelligently crafted songwriting...an original...”
Ken Capobianco/Billboard Magazine

“Acoustic rocker Kevin McCluskey performs admirably and is a quality singer-songwriter.”
Steve Morse/The Boston Globe

“...wonderfully soulful...between John Fogerty and John Gorka...this is tasty stuff...”
Larry Flick/Billboard Magazine

“Kevin, thanks for the CD...it’s really enjoyable.”
Bruce Cockburn/True North Records

“...funky stuff, reminiscent of Ry Cooder and Nick Lowe.”
T-Bone Wolk/bassist/Saturday Night Live/Hall & Oates

“Kevin draws you in with the melody, then grabs your heart with emotional, gutsy lyrics.”
Catie Curtis/Hear Music

“...echoes of Bruce Springsteen and Warren Zevon - I love it!”
Barbara Kessler/Songwriter

“Kevin’s music, like him, is lively and entertaining. He possesses a wealth of musical knowledge - I hear everybody from Elvis Costello to the Velvet Underground. Great melodies!”
Ellis Paul/Rounder Records

From Students

“Professor McCluskey is an inspiring teacher who helps students shed light on their lifelong dreams and turns them into real goals. Using a career planning homework assignment, I landed a teaching position in Quito, Ecuador, immediately upon graduating from Berklee. I was especially impressed because after the class learned how to write a great cover letter and an appropriate résumé, the second half of the assignment had us actually using the materials the following week looking for a job!”
Katie Thiroux/class of 2009/Berklee/Professional bassist/Los Angeles, California

“ Kevin invited me to work at the record label… He made me feel welcome, brought me into the team, and immediately valued my opinions and contributions, and attitude he extended to every one involved with the label.”
Jessica Huber/Class of 2012/Berklee/Assistant Scoring Manager/The Walking Dead

“Berklee is very fortunate indeed, to have, in Professor McCluskey, someone with music industry experience that is both deep and wide. An inspiring teacher, who is also a legitimate artist in his own right, and someone who cares so deeply about his alma mater and his students.”
Professor Lehigh Haruvi/Berklee

Boston is a hot bed of fantastic guitarists! Professor McCluskey counts many of these artists as friends and colleagues, but he is also able to offer much more. An internationally-recognized touring artist, he was invited to teach at his alma mater, Berklee College of Music - the very first academic to teach entrepreneurship to musicians using the three-year pro-forma model. As such, his overview of the music industry is exceptional in both its breath and length. A Music Director and DJ at national public radio station WUMB-FM, an award-winning jingle writer, he was promoted early at Berklee, he was invited to become the Executive Producer of Jazz Revelation Records (JRR) where he produced dozens of CDs, hundreds of concerts, and toured internationally. Invited to present workshops at the Royal College of Music in London, England as well as conservatories in Central and South America, Tokyo, Singapore, and all over North America. A special highlight occurred when Professor McCluskey was invited by super producer Clive Davis (Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Aerosmith, and Whitney Houston) to teach his entrepreneurship class at NYU/TISCH.

And all of that is well and good, but perhaps the more essential reason to study with Professor McCluskey is his radically different teaching style which focuses on the individual life experiences of each student. As a matter of course, he is patient, good natured, rather funny, and his passion and commitment to a lifetime of professional musicianship comes through with the strum of every chord.

In addition to acoustic and electric guitar, he is schooled in piano, bass, the Indian sitar, vocals, sound design, lap steel guitar, and because he believes in what Zen Buddhism refers to as "Beginner's Mind", he recently took up both the violin and the Arabic oud. His proficiency on his new instruments is fairly disastrous, but in this way he stays in touch with what it's like to struggle with both the physical and psychological demands of learning a new instrument.

Acoustic guitar lessons include creative capo use and alternate tunes à la David Crosby and Joni Mitchell.

Electric guitar lessons explore discovering your own style while addressing the complexities of amplifiers, apps, guitars and their pick ups.

Genres include folk, blues, bluegrass, rock, EDM, jazz, and his own unique songwriting that garnered him a national distribution deal, tremendous radio airplay, and a Boston Music Award Nomination.

Professor McCluskey is very comfortable with beginners, and has also worked privately with professional guitarists who are stuck in a rut musically, and need to rekindle that fire that is essential to authentic musicianship.

With a fully outfitted home studio, your lessons will be recorded, and if you're interested in songwriting, whether it's instrumental or includes lyrics, McCluskey feels there's no better way to learn your instrument then by digging down deep and recording your own original music.

lessons are typically an hour in length, but often run over when it's necessary, so that the students can get a real grasp on the material.

Music, of all the arts, is, Professor McCluskey believes, the most powerful communication tool that we know of, and if you are truly ready to join that very long and historical line of troubadours and players, you will find that an able and willing instructor and creative partner is only an email or phone call away.
