About Alexa
I am a former humanities Ph.D. student who has degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and Oberlin College. I love teaching and engaging students in writing, and have taught all forms of writing from creative, basic grammar, analytical writing and more advanced philosophical long-form texts. I have a background in both dissertation writing and poetry, and truly enjoy the feeling of helping a student discover a balance between concepts that are both defensible but also engaging enough to be debatable, exciting and expansive. I am to equip students, both in the sciences in the humanities, with a knowledge that writing is something they can master personally and is a skill that can benefit them professional, scholastically and personally.

I approach most analytical topics from the approach of "data mining"--what can we learn when we look at the details of a text, a film or an image? What can the ideas that we immediately generate tell us about the way our minds work, and how can we work with that natural impulse to create something original and invigorating to the reader? I try to inspire my students to write essays they themselves would be engaged to read and to push their ideas past what is obvious and into the realm where they take intellectual risks, finding that these risks pay off! I have taught students with everything from a rudimentary background in syntax to advanced undergraduate students in UC Berkeley--for me, the development of a student's confidence and proficiency in writing is the most exciting part of teaching.
