About Alana
.Hi! My name is Alana and I am here to help students feel more confident about their academic abilities! My specialties include K-12 English and Social Studies, ACT, and college/transfer/graduate school essays. I am patient, understanding, and dedicated to making sure that my students have adequate help and resources to perform their best and have the most confidence in themselves with whatever they are tackling.
I have always been a passionate and hard-working student. Through my 4.0 in high school and extracurriculars, I was able to receive an academic and leadership scholarship to UC Berkeley. At Berkeley, I graduated with honors and recognition and completed an honors thesis in 2019. I was then accepted and completed over two years of Teach for America, in New Orleans, where I taught 5th and 11th grade Social Studies, 9-11 grade English, and ACT Prep. During my time in New Orleans, I received honors in my Teaching Certifications. Additionally. I created and implemented a curriculum for U.S. History, English I-III, and ACT English/Reading, resulting in the highest test scores in the district for all of the above subjects in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years and led to my 'Rookie Teacher of the Year" award in 2020.
As a former High School teacher, I am well versed in the writing process and craftsmanship it takes to create a well-written, authentic personal statement. I support students to brainstorm, develop, and revise personal statements. It is important for me to help my students develop their own unique stories. My guidance has helped previous students receive acceptance to institutions such as Brown University, University of Chicago, Georgetown University, University of California School of Law, and Fordham University School of Law.

My teaching methods and techniques are developed from my experience in writing curriculum for English, Social Studies, and ACT Prep. The curriculums analyze most missed questions from practice tests to develop worksheets, homework that focused on the commonly missed questions. I have my students complete an ongoing "wrong answer journal". This allows students to keep an updated log of the types of questions they are missing for their specific subject and enables students to narrow their focus on those skills in order to perfect them.
As an essay counselor, I have students follow what I call the "flow method". The "flow method" is a brainstorming, drafting, writing, and editing process that enables students to develop their own passionate and unique personal statements. It is important for me to help my students develop their own unique stories.
