About Alma
I was not always a straight-A student. In middle school, I struggled academically and averaged mostly Bs and Cs. When I got to high school, I had to figure out how I actually learned best and develop study strategies that worked for me. Over time, that completely changed how I performed academically. I went on to take 15 AP courses, score a 1560 on the SAT, and now maintain a 4.0 at UC Berkeley as a Biochemistry and Public Health double major. Because I have been on both sides of academic success, I understand how frustrating it can be to struggle in a class and how much of a difference it can make to find an approach that finally works for you.

One of my AP Chemistry students went from a C average to an A, and that experience reflects how I approach tutoring: I focus on figuring out exactly what is holding a student back rather than simply reteaching the same material they heard in class. I have several years of tutoring experience and am comfortable adapting to different learning styles, whether that means breaking down a difficult concept, working through practice problems, preparing for an upcoming exam, or going back and filling in gaps from earlier material. As a UC Berkeley biochemistry student with a 4.0 GPA and experience taking 15 AP courses, I know what it takes to succeed in challenging STEM classes, but I also know that the same explanation does not work for every student. My goal is for students to leave our sessions actually understanding the material and feeling capable of tackling it on their own.
