About Alexander
Hi there, my name is Alex.
I'm a former European Court of Justice lawyer (UK jurist cabinet), with degrees from the London School of Economics (First Class), the University of Oxford (Merit) and City Law School (Merit).
My specialisms are in history, politics and law, though I am equally happy to teach English language & Literature, Geography or Sociology. In 2010, I achieved A*A*A*A* at A level in English, Geography, History and Politics so am competent at this level. In 2009, the year prior to the introduction of the A* at A level, I received AA in French and Spanish (i.e. taken a year early).
I read International History at the LSE for my undergraduate, before completing a three-year M.Phil in International Relations at Oxford. I then completed a law conversion and was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales in 2019.
I hold an Advanced DBS Check Certificate (re-issued in January 2021), and have previously worked with children with SEN or Disability (SEND) as an advocate before the Education Tribunal. I am available weekdays in the daytime or evening, as well as weekends- whenever best suits you and your family. I have been a tutor for three years, working with students in the UK, USA and Luxembourg. I have tutored in both English and French.
I am experienced in academic writing, having authored pieces for the UCL Journal of Jurisprudence and King's College London's Security and Conflict Journal. I have written three dissertations throughout my student career- two of which won academic prizes (LSE James Joll Award 2013; Monckton Chambers EU Law Dissertation Prize 2018). I'm comfortable advising students on all aspects of dissertation planning and writing, from methodology, through to planning and writing.

As it is the key tenet of the 2014 National Curriculum, my tutoring approach is mainly defined by the knowledge-led approach to pedagogy inspired by ED Hirsch. That is to say, for most learners to gain a basic fluency in a subject from which they will be able to engage in inquiry-forms of learning, it is first necessary to help them learn, master and apply the basic "blocks" of knowledge that define a subject i.e. the mastery approach. How much of this initial scaffolding that will need to be done will, of course, be dependent on each student's prior level of knowledge, confidence etc.
While building up this body of knowledge is key, I'm not a fan of achieving it through rote memorisation. I think the latter reduces students' emotional investment in a subject, as learning no longer becomes joyous but a task. I prefer instead use a bit of charisma and creativity to introduce students to concepts through scaffolded examples we can work through together. I then use retrieval practice and quizzing to identify the gaps in their misunderstanding, from which I build more complex examples or introduce new concepts.
Of course, what works with one pupil does not always with another. Five-year-olds are different from 15-year-olds with respect to both their cognitive development and their knowledge and expertise, while a lesson on concepts and definitions is different from a lesson on applications. With younger children, I'll therefore often begin with more play-based pedagogies when introducing concepts, while with older teenagers, I'm more open to accelerating more quickly to inquiry-based forms of teaching.

I studied undergrad history with Alex at LSE and vouch for him as a wonderful tutor. Not only was he ridiculously knowledgeable and hardworking, he is a lovely person and easy to get on with. If you're looking for a tutor you definitely won't go wrong with Alex.
Alex is a 5-star tutor! He has an immense knowledge in the subject matter and is highly skilled at conveying that knowledge in a fresh and clear way (despite history being generally boring!). I 100% recommend Alex! Make sure to ask him about his travels, views on anything football related, and wait to be blown away!
I am a colleague of Alexander at the Court of Justice of the European Union. He is a professional, friendly and very smart young man. He is excellent at speaking through with younger lawyers complex subjects. I think he would also be very good at working with the young pupils.
I have known Alexander for four years, our lines regularly crossing since our time together as graduate researchers at the LSE. He is smart, diligent, attentive and has an outstanding mind. Most importantly, he's empathetic and unassuming. He loves talking to others and guiding them through topics and debate. I would highly recommend him.
Alex is an exceptionally good tutor - patient, thorough, and encouraging. He has helped me tremendously on my struggles. I am very glad to have found him - highly recommend.
