About Zoe
I am a gentle soul with a great passion for teaching others to express themselves. My past students have described my classes as "calming", "encouraging", "slay", and "very goofy". :) My bachelor's degree in Visual Art Education equipped me to teach the following subjects to K-12 students: - Drawing - Painting - Printmaking - Ceramics - Sculpture - Metalsmithing - Fiber Arts - Photography - Art History I am especially well-versed in self-portraiture, observational drawing, and Feminist Art. In my personal art practice, I often experiment with using different media in order to best support the intention of the work I am creating. I truly believe that any skill can be learned by a person who is dedicated to trying and unafraid of failing.

I use a "big idea" approach to teaching art. This method allows students to lead themselves and create authentic, personally meaningful projects. It is also adaptable to all ages and experience levels (including adults!).
Here is an outline of my typical teaching process:
1. Start with a concept (big idea): What would you like your artwork to communicate? Getting started is often the hardest part! I will help students to select an idea they are passionate about by getting to know their current abilities, interests, motivations, goals, and world-view.
2. Conceptualize and research: How can that idea best be communicated? What media will be most suitable? What artists can we draw inspiration from? What skills will you need to learn to successfully create this work of art?
3. Sketch/model ideas: How does a change in composition affect the message? I will teach how to incorporate the elements and principles of design to students' projects.
4. Artwork creation: Let's get messy and have some fun! I'll help students through obstacles they encounter and continue to teach them technical skills.
5. Reflection: Students will learn to beneficially critique their work and processes. What went well? What would you change if you made it again?
This process encourages students to "think like an artist" and build a unique portfolio of artwork. I believe that self-expression is vital to a person's life. I personally use my art practice as a way to cope with and appreciate the world around me-- I teach my students to do the same.
As my favorite artist, Elizabeth Layton, often said: "You gotta have art!"
