I prioritize getting to know my student first. How well do you already know the material, where are you getting stuck, and what is your learning style so can meet you where you're at and build from there!
I utilizes colors to highlight the parts of formulas and steps to break them down into bit-sized and understandable pieces. I've also used fun analogies and stories to explain math rules and patterns. I do everything I can to increase their engagement with the material and try to be as hands-off and encouraging as possible. Sometimes kids need practice, encouragement, and guidance more than they need explanations. The more they do the more they learn and the more they will understand the material.
