About Mike
My name is Mike and I bring over 25 years of experience in English language, Business amd Management teaching. I was born and raised in London, England after my parents immigrated here from the Caribbean. My early experience of helping them to learn English inspired me to become a teacher. I teach English, Business and Management. My early education at a reputable London grammar school provided me with a solid foundation in English grammar. This, combined with my practical language experiences and university studies, equips me to teach English for use in professional, academic, and social contexts. My 25-year international teaching experience has spanned a number of countries, including England, Poland, Turkey and Colombia, and a long list of English based exams. These exams include, IELTS. TOEFL, CEFR, A-Level, BTEC and even the English section of the Chinese Gaokao high school exam. I am happy to say that my positive student feedback tells me that my lessons are fun, creative, engaging, informative and flexible. I combined technology with conventional teaching methodologies online and in the classroom. I monitor my students’ progress closely through a technique called ‘assessment for learning’ (AfL). I use this to decide which teaching and learning strategies work best for each of my students. Sometimes, I teach through a technique called CLIL which is basically teaching English through vocational subjects such as business, management and psychology. As a result, a number of my students have found jobs in fields such as finance, education and medicine. I hold a CELTA qualification, Certificate of Education and a degree in Psychology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management.

All of my lessons are connected to a comprehensive Scheme of Work (SoW). A SoW is a document covering all the essential skills, knowledge and learning opportunities the student needs to pass the exam. In Week 2, I provide each student with an individualised SoW. This allows us to work together to agree lesson content and, if necessary, identify specific learning technologies, such as reading pens, note-taking apps and speech-to-text software, which may help students meet their individual learning needs. I take a highly personalised approach to teaching students; I do not follow the 'one-size-fits-all' way. Instead, I adapt each lesson to suit the needs of the student. I make good use of a range of teaching methods such as, active retrieval, spaced repetition, socratic questioning and to boost personalisation and improve learning outcomes. Lessons are generally scheduled to last one hour; however, the timing can be changed to accommodate individual student learning needs. I have had a great deal of experience working with individuals aged between 14 and 70. I consistently support students to identify areas where they can improve both during class and at home. Feedback from my students tells me that my lessons are fun, and enjoyable, informative and socially engaging.
