About Greg

I'm a professional writer with 25 years of experience and an MFA. For over a decade, I coached young athletes from beginner to premier club level. So I know how to develop a student patiently, one skill at a time. I've also guided college application essays that earned students undergraduate admission to Bowdoin and graduate admission at MIT. Whether you're facing an essay that matters or want to write with more clarity and confidence, I'll meet you where you are and help you get better. I'd be glad to work with you.

My approach

I coach writing the way I coached sport for 12 years. By meeting you where you are and building from there. On the field, I took kids from rec-league beginners to premier club players. The method is the same on the page. Find the strength you already have, fix the one thing holding you back, then repeat until it's yours.

I don't rewrite your work for you. That teaches nothing. I ask the questions that make you see your own writing more clearly, then hand you the tools to fix it yourself.

My teaching method

Good writing is a set of learnable moves, not a mystery. I teach them one at a time.

We start with your actual work, such as an essay, a story, a passage you're wrestling with. I read it the way an editor reads: what's working, what's unclear, what the reader feels versus what you meant. Then we pick one thing to strengthen. Not ten. One. You master it, and we move to the next.

For literature, I teach you to read like a writer. That is, to see the choices the author made, and why. That's the same skill that makes your own writing sharper.

A typical lesson

Every lesson is built around your goal, but the shape is consistent. We open by reviewing the work you brought. I show you what's landing and where a reader gets lost. We focus on one technique, such as a stronger opening, tighter sentences, a clearer argument, a scene that shows instead of tells. You revise a section live, with me coaching as you go. You leave with a specific assignment and a clear reason it matters.

What sets me apart

I'm a working writer, not just a teacher of writing. Twenty-five years as a professional, an MFA, and a career spent making complex ideas clear for real readers. I've also coached college application essays that earned students admission to Bowdoin and MIT. I know how to help a young writer sound like themselves under pressure, when it counts most.

Who these lessons are for

Middle and high school students facing essays that matter, including the college application essay. Adult learners returning to writing or literature. Aspiring writers working on their own projects who want honest, useful feedback from someone who does this for a living. Whether you want to write a winning admissions essay, finally understand a classic novel, or just write with more clarity and confidence, we'll build it one skill at a time.
