About Kerri

Award-winning, enthusiastic, and engaging English and French educator with 8 years of teaching experience to college undergraduate and K-8 students, who caters experiences to your child’s specific needs. I offer a complimentary 30-minute consultation with parents/guardians to gain a sense of your child's particular needs, allowing me to tailor my lessons accordingly. Passionate about reading and writing since I was five, I enjoy helping students improve their English and French skills through the techniques that work best for them. I often use relevant and kid-friendly educational games to make learning fun and help them better grasp the concepts.

Early Elementary School: To further engage students who have a device, I use the tech tool Kahoot! into my lessons to quiz students before exams. I create 10 questions, each with four answers that include words and corresponding colors, making it simple to use and visually appealing. For example, if your child is learning/reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, the first question could be “What is the first thing the caterpillar ate?” Since the answer is one apple, I’d use the color red for “apple” and write “one apple” underneath it.

Middle School: Themes in The Great Gatsby Mini Lesson: Students will explore the main themes of The Great Gatsby and connect them to how people today pursue success, wealth, and happiness.
Hook: Show students a photo of a 1920s party or a modern celebrity event. Ask: “What do you think these people are trying to show about themselves?”
(Re)Introduce Themes (simplified for middle school):
-The American Dream – Working hard to achieve success, but sometimes it’s more about money and showing off.
-Class and Wealth – The difference between people born rich and people who become rich.
-The Past and the Future – Why holding on too tightly to the past can keep us from moving forward.
-Moral Decay – How fun and glamour can sometimes hide selfishness or bad behavior.
Text Connection: Ask a student to read aloud the following passage from Chapter 3, which provides details about Gatsby’s wealth and extravagant parties:
-Choose one student to read the following passage in Chapter 3 about one of Gatsby's extravagant parties: "In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars. At least once a fortnight a corps of caterers came down with several hundred feet of canvas and enough colored lights to make a Christmas tree of Gatsby's enormous garden."
-Ask students: “Do you think people came to Gatsby’s parties because they liked him, or because they wanted to be part of the glamour?”
-Exit Ticket (5 minutes)
Students write 2–3 sentences in their journals to reflect on the theme they chose from the novel and explain how they believe it is still true today.
