About Guadalupe
I am a Spanish instructor originally from Venezuela. My first teaching experience came when I was eighteen years old lecturing in an elementary school. I truly enjoyed that role, but I had to dedicate full time to my studies in the medical field. Studied and practiced medicine, having a successful career as a Family Doctor. Teaching and coaching were significant components of my duties as I had to interact with patients and interns in a daily basis.
In 2005, I moved to the United States and accepted a position lecturing Spanish at West Virginia University (WVU). I recognized the needed to build an academic foundation, so I enrolled in the Master Program at West Virginia University and completed two Masters Degrees, one in foreign languages with a focus in Spanish and another one in secondary education. During that time, I worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant lecturing in Spanish at WVU. This student/teacher interaction was the key to experiment and apply multiple teaching techniques and develop my instructional skills to achieve a productive learning community in the classroom.
After graduation, I worked for three years as a Spanish Instructor at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. I concentrated my efforts on facilitating the learning process through a communicative approach centered on constant interaction/participation of the students. I taught all levels of Spanish, including basic and advanced courses. I was able to share some of my culture by teaching Latin-American Culture and different literature courses. I designed and prepared interdisciplinary courses such as Medical Spanish and Business Spanish.
To continue improving my qualifications and to incorporate research activities into my skillset, I decided to complete an EdD in the Curriculum & Instruction program with a minor in foreign language.

In my experience the communicative instruction plays a definitive role in second language acquisition. Therefore, in the classroom, I use the processing instruction approach which gives importance to the instruction and fits very well with the communication; it assures me that the students’ acquisition of Spanish is taking place.
I apply the processing instruction by following the structure of input-comprehension check-output (Lee; Van Patten, 2005).I learned and practiced that structured input (the information that learners hear when teachers speaks) has to be comprehensible, I mean, when teaching a language we have to do enough repetition, to avoid complicated syntax, to reformulate the idea, etc . Also, the input has to be meaningful. I bring to the class real contexts and within this context is involved the grammar point that L2 need to learn. For example: I can use the travel context in order to teach imperative, I can use recommendation to teach subjunctive, I can use daily routine to teach reflexive verbs in Spanish.
However, even though we keep the structure of structured input to make students assimilate grammar forms, there is evidence that input alone is not sufficient to obtain high levels of oral proficiency in a second language.
