About Raphael

My BA was at the University of Birmingham in Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences. I majored in Philosophy and achieved a first. In my third year, I did a year abroad at the University of Melbourne where I was exposed to different disciplinary approaches which I then brought into my dissertation which was entitled: 'How might the Gen Z depression crisis fit into the Nietzschean trajectory of nihilism?' and in which I drew on Philosophy, Psychoanalysis and contemporary cultural theory to analyse depression memes. At Kingston, I developed more of my interest in the continental philosophical tradition and attained a distinction. Regarding other subjects, I have sufficient experience in English Literature to teach University level after achieving an A* at A-level and firsts in all my university English modules. I am capable of teaching GCSE maths as while I did not take it for A-level, I achieved A*'s in both my GCSE and the (optional) advanced FSMQ advanced module.

With a distinction from Kingston University in the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy and a 1st class degree from the University of Birmingham in Philosophy, I have experience with many areas of the discipline, from logic and epistemology, to metaphysics and applied ethics, as well as critical theory. My Master's work is in the continental tradition, particularly critical theory and Marxism, with a particular focus in German Idealism and French Rationalist epistemology. My dissertation was on Althusser's notion of structural causality and was awarded a prize for outstanding achievement. My background has been very interdisciplinary and so I am able to cater my approach to the individual students' needs, understanding that different students will require tutoring for a particular exam style. My understanding of the various challenges of conforming to the desired style of a particular curriculum enables students to learn in a way conducive to an academic setting, while my enthusiasm for and experience with a variety of disciplines and academic styles (English literature, Maths, Logic, Politics) allows me to engage meaningfully with students and cater lessons to their interests and strengths. My typical lesson plan would begin by identifying current weakness or areas of difficulty the student has in engaging with a discipline and working from there to identify the reasons for this or to find alternative approaches. I am capable of teaching: - Philosophy (all areas) at graduate and post-graduate level - English at university level - Politics at A-level - Maths at GCSE level Please do not hesitate to get in touch with look forward to with any questions!
