About Michael
Hi, I am an architectural designer with 14 years in practice, most of it on high-end residential in Saint Tropez, New York, Miami and Dubai, including six years at SAOTA an AJ top 100 firm. Most recently I was lead concept designer for a luxury residential developer, running design across around 20 projects and leading a team of nine.
Teaching is not new to me. It was a large part of that job. Most of what I know came from people in the studio taking the time to sit down with me when I was starting out, and I ended up doing the same for the designers I led. Watching someone move from a vague idea to a scheme they can actually stand up and defend is the most satisfying part of the work, and it is the reason I am here.
What I want to give students is the view from inside practice. Not the version where a concept gets a grade, but the version where it has to survive a client, a site and a budget and still be good.
I am patient, and I am direct about what is not working. I would rather help you understand why something fails than simply tell you to change it.

I have spent 14 years in practice on high-end residential in Saint Tropez, New York, Miami and Dubai, including four years at SAOTA. Most recently I was lead concept designer for a luxury residential developer, running design across around 20 projects and managing a team of nine. I trained and qualified internationally rather than through the UK route, so what I bring to a session is practice rather than the exam system.
The sessions are about design. Where a concept comes from and how to develop one that holds up. How a plan works and where it fails. Massing, form and how a building sits on its site. Spatial planning and how people actually move through a space. How to present and lay out your work so the idea reads at a glance. And how to talk about it out loud without falling apart.
Portfolio is where I am most useful. I have sat on the hiring side and reviewed a lot of portfolios, so I can tell you quickly what someone reviewing yours actually looks at, what they skip past, and why strong work sometimes gets overlooked purely because of how it has been put together.
Useful for students at any stage, for people applying to university, and for anyone assembling a portfolio for a job. My focus is concept and design rather than technical detailing.
