About Anushka
-How long have you been teaching piano lessons?
I began teaching 7 years ago, and have run workshops for adults and children as well as teaching privately. I specialise in teaching complete beginners to intermediate level. As a teacher and musician, it's important to me that pupils develop a rounded sense of musicianship so that they have fun learning and enjoy playing their instrument. Then, practising won't be a chore!
-Who have you taught?
I enjoy teaching adults as well as children, and have successfully taught complete beginners at any age from 5 to 60+! I have mentored students through improvisation, songwriting experiments, aural training and scales practice; from reading music, to learning a first Bach prelude, right up to their grade exams.
- What kind of musical experience do you have?
I'm a versatile musician and enjoy playing a wide range of music including blues, latin and pop piano alongside classical favourites. I trained classically as a pianist and cellist, and have been playing the piano for over 20 years. I've played in a wide range of ensembles, including string quartets, orchestras, jazz bands and choirs. I also write music and regularly perform in various bands.

-What are your lessons like?
I encourage a well-rounded sense of musicianship, and blend playing enjoyable pieces with technical exercises and music theory into my lessons. I welcome students' creativity during lessons, and seek to help them build a repertoire that they really enjoy playing.
It's great when pupils know what music that they want to play, and I'm happy to teach music that they bring to me. This has ranged from Bach to Billie Holliday classics; to blues, pop songs, and many Disney tunes! Of course, if your passion is developing a classical repertoire, then we can focus on that.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I specialise in teaching beginners to intermediate level (around Grade 5), and teach both children and adults. I can teach complete beginners as well as people who have some experience and would like to improve. I can prepare students for grades, or teach people who would like to play for enjoyment and just learn something new!
I teach children from age 6. I have lot of experience with children of all ages, and I recommend waiting until children are able to focus their attention before starting lessons. This varies greatly with each child, so I welcome a trial lesson where we could meet each other first.
I really enjoy teaching adults, and admire having the perseverance to take up an instrument later on. I appreciate the time constraints that often arise with having work commitments, and advise adult pupils to try to keep regular lessons even if it's sometimes difficult to squeeze in time for practice.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at students' homes in Redbridge, Ilford, Barking, Newham, Hackney, and Havering.
I am happy to travel to areas in East and Central London covered by TFL Rail, the London Overground and the Central Line.
- When are you available?
I'm available to teach on weekdays & evenings. I'm flexible and will try to find a time that works for us both.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Piano Grades 1-5
Music Theory Grades 1-5
I can also assist with extra tuition for Music GCSE.
I can prepare students for ABRSM or Trinity exam boards.
