About Harrison

I am a Biology tutor with 7 years of experience and a PhD in Population Genetics. I have taught over 255 students from GCSE through to undergraduate level with a specific depth in the quantitative aspects of biology — population genetics, biostatistics, and quantitative ecology — that many Biology tutors are unable to teach with genuine expertise. My research background in population genetics means I bring a genuine scientist's analytical perspective to my teaching, which I believe develops far more complete biological and scientific capability than content-only instruction. Let me help you develop the quantitative biological reasoning that the most demanding biology requires.

My Biology teaching at the quantitative end of the discipline specifically develops the statistical and analytical reasoning that modern biology increasingly requires, producing students who are prepared not only for the biological content of their courses but for the data analysis, literature reading, and scientific reasoning they will encounter in genuine biological study. I teach experimental design as a core Biology skill, covering the principles of controlled experiments, the choice of appropriate controls, the selection of sample sizes, and the identification of sources of systematic error, because these skills are both examined directly and foundational to all genuine biological research. Statistical analysis in biology — the chi-squared test for independence, the t-test for comparing means, correlation analysis, simple linear regression — is developed with specific emphasis on choosing the appropriate test for a given question and interpreting the result in biological terms rather than only performing the calculation. I use primary biological literature — accessible journal articles — as teaching materials from A-Level onwards, developing students' ability to read, evaluate, and discuss original research, because this ability is both valued by universities and genuinely enriching as an engagement with living biology. The relationship between genetics and statistics — understanding Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium as a statistical null hypothesis, understanding allele frequency changes as statistical signals — is explicitly developed because this connection is fundamental to population genetics and evolution but is rarely taught clearly. My teaching goal is a Biology student who is genuinely prepared for the analytical demands of university biological science.
